Prima di diventare gustose salsicce, i maiali ingrassano rapidamente nei moderni allevamenti o grufolano liberamente allo stato selvatico. La pelle del maiale può essere nera o pezzata, ma tutti noi pensiamo sempre immediatamente al tipico maialino rosa che ci è stato suggerito dai cartoni animati, dalla famosa favola dei ”3 porcellini” e, recentemente, anche dal personaggio televisivo di Peppa Pig. Una curiosa caratteristica dei maiali è la loro coda ricurva che solitamente forma un ricciolo. Per preparare il prosciutto, sia crudo che cotto, viene utilizzato il cosciotto posteriore dei maiali.

A curious feature of pigs is their curved tail which usually forms a curl. To prepare the ham, both raw and cooked, the rear leg of the pigs is used.
