When I was little I used to play with a wild plant that had very pretty lilac flowers. I did not know its name, but it was fun to have it around, because we wet the tip of its fruit in the form of an elongated brown capsule with saliva, and in minutes it opened, spilling aproximately 20 seeds and making a sound that surprised whoever had it on top of it.

Cuando estaba pequeña jugaba con una planta silvestre que tenía flores color lila muy bonitas. Desconocía su nombre pero era divertido tenerla cerca, pues mojabamos con saliva la punta de su fruto en forma de cápsula marrón alargada, y a los minutos se abría derramando aproximadamente 20 semillas y haciendo un sonido seco que sorprendía al que la tuviera encima.
That's why we called it "explosive", the exact time it would jump was not known. If we put it in someone's hair and it exploded, they would be scared for sure. The same thing happened with the dogs, it was funny to see them jump and run away without knowing what had fallen on them.
Now I know that it is not just a weed with pretty flowers. It is also considered a plant with medicinal properties. Is the Ruellia tuberosa, or as it is popularly known "yuquilla".
Por eso la llamábamos "explosivo", no se sabía el tiempo exacto en que saltaría. Si se lo poniamos a alguien en el cabello y explotaba, seguro se asustaba. Lo mismo sucedía con los perros, era gracioso verlos saltar y huir sin saber qué cosa les había caído.
Ahora se que no solo es una maleza con bonitas flores. Es considerada también una planta con propiedades medicinales. Es la Ruellia tuberosa, o como se le conoce popularmente "yuquilla".

La ruellia tuberosa fue introducida en Taiwan, donde es utilizada en medicina popular. La medicina ayurvedica tambien le ha atribuido propiedades diuréticas, analgésicas, antipireticas, antidiabéticas, gastroprotectoras, antihipertensivas, y se ha usado en el tratamiento de la gonorrea. There is another variety used for ornamental purposes whose flowers are a darker purple, but can also be pink or blue. These do not have explosive capsules and their flowers also last only a few hours.
