People rushing home

Since Ho Chi Minh City is the largest economic hub in Vietnam, it is home to most of the country's economic firms. Hence, the city is a destination for workers from all over the country in search of work and earning a living. The city has seen a recent influx of migrants who have come in search of employment, usually in factories or large companies. This July, however, Covid was spreading and it forced Ho Chi Minh to close its doors.

There were promises that everything would be fine things got worse when HCM became the hot spot for the covid. That was when the city had to take action and declare a total lockdown. The authority has instructed that everyone in their homes should stay indoors to ensure their safety from the virus. Every day was just another day where people couldn't be free to interact with society or go home to their loved ones. It was depressing and desperate for them, but they couldn't leave or do anything about it.

Almost 5 months have passed since the covid outbreak, and most people have been vaccinated. As the city gradually opens up, even more workers are being allowed to return home. Immediately, hundreds of thousands of people rushed to gather all their belongings and what they had and drove on motorbikes more than 10.000 kilometers to return to their hometown. With the domestic public transports not operating yet, it is the only way they can get home

It is no surprise that people want to move out of the city, even though they will have many difficulties and sleepless nights during the long journey home. With the bad situation as bad as it has been, it has been hard for most people to stay and survive. No work for months resulted in them not earning an income, but still having to pay rent. It's the main reason they all want to leave no matter how difficult it will be and how sleepless they will face during the journey home.

Over the past few days, I have seen many people carry their wives, children, and their stuff on the old motorbike long distances to drive home for days in the constant rain and storm. The rain continued to pour down, making it difficult for them to see what was ahead on the road. I know that the idea of driving in that kind of weather is tempting and it can be very dangerous. They're still driving as their hearts are filled with the desire to return to their beloved homeland.

When I think of the dangers that they are facing constantly, my heart bleeds with pain and sorrow. It is hard to watch them go through this terrible experience; every single day I worry for their safety. I feel sad that the local authorities failed to arrange safe means of transportation for their residents.

It's been heavy raining for days and many distractions on the road. Please take extra caution, stay focused and drive safe. Have a pleasant journey home, people, your family is waiting for you ❤️
