ASEAN Hive Community Challenge #20 - Local Desserts --- "They're More Than Just Desserts!"

It's time to do another ASEAN Hive Community Challenge, and this time, the topic would definitely make our mouths water and tummies growl.

I'm a foodie and this topic is a perfect opportunity to introduce some of the Filipino desserts that I love. To start with, Filipino desserts are more than that, they can be taken for merienda, snacks or even meals.

The main local desserts I'm going to introduce on this post were what my family and I had for breakfast this morning. I'm excited to show them to you, so sit back and enjoy!

The triangular one is called "Puto Maya" while the longer one is called "Budbud" in Cebuano or "Suman" in Tagalog. They're both sticky rice cakes. They're glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk, but usually puto maya has ginger in it. As for budbud, depending on the type, has some flavors.

As I've mentioned, I had it for breakfast this morning, so I paired it with some hot yummy coffee. Usually, when they're eaten for dessert or snack, they're various ways to enjoy them.

Puto maya can be eaten with mango while budbud can be topped with some condensed milk. It really depends on the person. Let me show you my style of eating these lovies.

I personally like dipping them in some milo or chocolate powder. Other times, I dip them in milk or anything sweet.

I also like dipping them in either coffee or some hot cocoa. Better yet, you can actually put them in a bowl and pour your coffee or hot cocoa on it. Your choice. :)

They might be considered a dessert for some, but for my family and I, they're among our favorite breakfast choices. <3

As I have mentioned earlier, I'm a foodie and I love taking photos of food that I enjoy munching on... so I'm going to show some more local desserts in the Philippines that are present in my gallery. <3

Jollibee is a local fast-food chain, so I believe this product is also considered a local dessert. I love Jollibee's Peach Mango pie. It's a great combination of salty, sweet and sour. I love having this for dessert whenever I go to Jollibee.

I love ube-flavored sweets and this ube cake from Cardinal Bakeshop in the Philippines is just phenomenal! It's so fluffy and the ube taste is so unique that you'd definitely ask for more.

This is halo-halo which is translated to mix-mix in English. It's basically shaved ice with a lot of other ingredients like fruits, jellies, nata de coco, flan and ube ice cream. We have to mix everything first before eating, thus its name.

There are various ways to cook or prepare banana saba/gardava , but this one is my favorite. We call it "ginanggang" in my place. The banana is skewered in a stick and grilled in charcoal. We then put some margarine and sugar afterwards. Yum!!!

These treats are a specialty from Bohol which is another island in Central Philippines. A few years back, my papa had a reunion with his comrades from the military in Bohol and when he came home here in Cebu, he brought us these souvenirs. These were for us and some of our friends. They're peanut kisses and calamay. Calamay means sugar, but this sweet and sticky treat has glutinous rice flour, coconut milk and of course brown sugar. Some of them also have peanuts which make it more flavorful.

These are interesting sweets I got from my grandpa (my papa's uncle) from Davao. I'm somehow his favorite grandchild, so every time he visits Cebu, he'd give me some durian and mangosteen treats. I'm not much into durian, but I love durian sweets and as for mangosteen, it's my favorite fruit. <3

Hey! Fresh fruits are desserts, too!!! haha Here are some of my favorite fruits. We have this delicious mango from Cebu and of course, mangosteen and some rambutan. I guess since these are tropical fruits, they're also available in other Southeast Asian countries. <3

Lastly, we have here a bunch of snacks or desserts from Cebu. We have Hojaldres, otap, rosquillos and chicharon. Well, chicharon can be a dish, though. When my Japanese or Korean friends visit the Philippines, they often give me some snacks from their country as souvenirs, so I usually prepare some Philippine delicacies for them to either take back to their country or eat while staying here.

So yeah, they're more than desserts... they can be a meal, snack or a tool for culture exchange. All in all, they're yummy treats which bring us joy and happiness. Food is love, after all.

I'll end this post here. I hope you enjoy it!!! See you around!!!
