Market Friday: The Food Street Of Premier 101, Kuching

Food glorious food.

Everybody loves a good meal.

And Sarawak is no exception to this rule. In fact, we're known as one of the most diverse and multicultural States in all of Malaysia! That means that our food is a melting pot of dishes from more than 30 ethnic groups, each with its own unique take on a dish or two.

It's not just about the great taste, though—there's something special about eating out with friends and family. In our culture, eating with family and friends is a communal affair and we always share our food. That is why eating out is one of our favorite pastimes here in Sarawak; as a foodie; it definitely my favorite hobby. It helps that eating out is also pretty affordable. So it's easy for families to pick up the tab for their meals without breaking the bank.

A few weeks ago, we wanted to take street food for dinner. Off we went to the food street of Premier 101 which is located about 10 minutes drive from where I lived. This is also the place where I would bring visitors to eat so that they can try different types of food from the more than 40 stalls here.

This place consists of a narrow lane between two rows of shophouses. The lane is cramped with tables and chairs.

image
Walking along the lane will bring you to a big open square where you will find even more stalls as well as tables and chairs.

The place is already very crowded. Sometimes it is hard to find a table and you may need to wait for a while. This time around I was very lucky to find an empty table. What I like about this place is that you can order food from any stall and the food will be delivered to your table.

This stall selling bean curd is very popular and even has a line of people queuing up.

This big signboard is a menu advertising the food available.

This stall sells fried and barbequed seafood from squid, fish to prawn.

You can choose your food by simply pointing at what you want.

One wrap coming up.

You can also buy cut fruits here to supplement your meal.

I ordered the clay pot rice for myself and my son Jonathan, The clay pot rice came with "lap cheong" (sausage), minced pork, mushroom, and salted fish. I loved how the salted fish made the dish even more tasty and flavorful.

image

Previously, the clay pot rice used to be cooked over charcoal fire. It seems that technology has caught up and now electricity is used instead. Personally, I don't think it made much difference to the taste of the dish. However I observed that the rice cooked using electricity is less burnt compared to cooking by charcoal fire.

My wife was not particularly hungry and so she opted for a bowl of pork porridge instead. It was a simple dish but the soup in the porridge was delicious.

image
To top it all, I also ordered a plate of hot and yummy dumplings.

We had an enjoyable dinner and at the same time do a bit of people watching too. The hustle and bustle of the place, the sights and the sounds enhanced our dining experience under the stars.
