Rescue P.A.W.S. in Thailand

There are a number of animal welfare organizations that have served as an inspiration for what we do here at Krabi Animal Welfare, and of what I consider to be one of the best success stories is Rescue PAWS located in Hua Hin, which is a beach vacation area south of Bangkok.

Although they are a relatively massive organization theses days, they had humble beginnings much like our own, and we look at them as a source of guidance for how to do this sort of operation successfully. When they first began it was just a couple of people who went out of their way to feed the many stray dogs in Hua Hin and the surrounding areas. As we have noticed when we were doing this, the number of dogs is an ever growing problem and the focus needs to shift from feeding to sterilization. As sad as it sounds, when all you do is simply feed the population you are actually encouraging it to grow even larger because a dog with a full belly is far more likely to engage in breeding and making more mouths to feed. Also, the pups are much better looked after by their mothers when mama doesn't need to scrounge for food and this simple feeding process, if not implemented along with sterilization programs, simply increases the base problem that you started with.

Don't get the wrong idea here: I am not trying to suggest that people shouldn't feed stray dogs because they will replicated like mad. If feeding them is the only thing that an organization is capable of, then do that. The idea is to reduce the suffering of these animals as much as possible. However, one female dog is capable of having 8 puppies every 6 months and after 6 years of uninhibited breeding, this results in 67,000 dogs (they did the math, not me.) Obviously there are many factors that make these numbers impossible but the point is that if sterilization is not introduced, the problem is insurmountable.

Since they started in 2013, Rescue P.A.W.S. has performed over 2000 sterilizations as well as thousands of vaccinations, and many many emergency wound care operations. We have no where near those sorts of numbers but we aspire to be just like this organization as we plug along day in and day out.

These guys also have a very successful adoption program and since they began they have found "forever homes" for over 300 stray animals and relocated them within Thailand and all around the world as well. This is the idea result for any stray dog and we too hope to have the level of organization that they do at some point in time in the future.

They keep their adoption section of their website up to date, and for me, someone who knows very little about web development, I am impressed with their setup that you can see HERE.

As one of the largest organizations in Thailand, Rescue P.A.W.S. also has a quite successful volunteer program and participating in something similar to what they offer is what lead me and my partner to become inspired to start Krabi Animal Welfare. We are all in this fight together, and I continue to admire the hard work that they are doing in Hua Hin. With any luck and a bunch of hard work, we will accomplish the same thing here in Krabi in the future.
