Montage of the strays we have helped in the past few weeks

Although we are operating with a skeleton crew and by far the lowest levels of funding that we have had since starting operations many years ago, we are still running around and helping as many of the homeless dogs that we can in Krabi, Thailand.

In the past we were able to help significantly more, but money drives everything in this world, including charitable efforts to help stray dogs. We are probably operating at about 20% of what we would like to be, but we still get around to help as many animals as possible.

one of the toughest obstacles in helping animals is gaining their trust in the first place. Most of these animals have been neglected or abused by humans most of their lives so they tend to be a bit stand-offish when approached by a person. Thankfully, most dogs think with their stomachs and we are able to break through this trust-barrier with some yummy goodies that we bring along with us.

It takes some time for these dogs to understand that we are not there to hurt them but it is a sometimes dangerous prospect to simply get close enough to determine if they have parasite infections or other life-threatening problems. Many of these dogs are in constant pain and they don't really understand what is causing it and therefore will lash out at anything that gets near them.

Most of the time we are able to gain their trust though and as a last resort fried chicken seems to always do the trick. There is something about that deep-fried goodness that they just can't resist. Once we are able to ascertain their health situation, unfortunately it is almost always one of rather severe parasite infestation that will eventually cause awful skin conditions which lead to infection, and this almost always leads to a slow and painful death.

Thankfully we still have a rather large stash of Bravecto due to the awesome contribution made by Krabi-Bangkok Animal Hospital, and since this edible medication is something the dogs think is meat, they almost always gobble it down no problems. After that, they will be parasite free both internally and externally for up to 4 months.

Once we accomplish this we try to get the entire pack treated and are careful to not waste doses on the same dog twice. There is very little chance of overdosing on this product but it is more than zero and we also don't want to waste it, so we are careful to record every dog that receives it.

The rest of the work consists of simply following up to check on the progress of the pack. I have to admit that it is quite heart-warming that after a few trips to visit them, most of them drop their defenses and will actually come out to greet us with tails a waggin'. It only takes a little bit of kindness to get these dogs to totally change their opinion about you. We truly don't deserve dogs... now if we could just get the world to care a bit more about them.
