An old friend comes back to visit the clinic

Unfortunately, it was because he had a medical problem again but this one was much easier to treat than the broken bones that he had last time.

WARNING: THERE'S AN IMAGE IN HERE THAT SOME MIND FIND DISTURBING

This was back in January

"Tao" is a good example of a street dog that is living as good a life as a street dog possibly can. Because he has a pleasant demeanor and isn't one of those dogs that barks all night long, he is looked after by many different people in his community. He is known to go door to door and way his tail and some people give him food and some pats on the head and then he moves on and around the neighborhood he goes.

He was with us back in January because of a broken bone and he stayed with us for a while. He didn't really care for the presence of the younger and more curious dogs but this is actually quite common with the old fellas. They just kind of want to be left alone a lot like older people do.

Well recently we got a call from one of the people in Tao's neighborhood telling us that he was limping again and we were concerned that he might have rebroken the bone or some bones in his leg. When we arrived he was his usual tail-a-waggin' self and hobbled towards us. He got into the kennel to be transported without any fuss and well, was actually a joy to deal with compared to some of the other kenneling situations we find ourselves in

When we got him back to the vet's office, thankfully an X-ray wasn't even necessary because as soon as we got him on the table the vet could see right away that the problem was an infection on his paw that had come from a small cut of unknown origin.

As dogs age, their paws lose toughness on the pads and in the intense heat and humidity of Thailand make it very easy for a cut to become infected here. This is especially true if the dog can not reach the wound with its tongue and that would be the case on front paws for older dogs and was the case here.

The wound just needed to be drained and treated with a topical anesthetic and wrapped. We will keep an eye on him for a day or so but here comes the bad news: This most likely is not the last time that this is going to happen to "Tao." These weakened feet pads tend to carry on for the rest of a dog's life and it isn't something that you can change. When people own dogs they will sometimes buy little dog shoes for the dogs but I don't think I need to tell you how that would not work in this situation and for the most part dogs hate them.

We are going to have a chat with the locals that look after him about if they could periodically check his paws for wounds because a little soap and water and maybe a dog treat could save us all a lot of time. Unfortunately, we can't be called out for things like this every time that a dog starts to hobble a bit.
