Fruits in the garden: A treasure left by our father

February 07, 2023

One more day and it marks a year since our father left us. Everything is still fresh and seems he is still here.

Last Sunday, I and my siblings decided to went home. We chose to went home on weekends because that's the only free time we had because my son don't have classes and they don't have work.

In the morning, we decided to visit our so called farm - our father's garden.

It is just a piece of land beside a creek and my father clean it and planted different plants on it.

I still remember when I was still a child. He planted a lot of banana trees and different fruit trees.

Banana is one of our sources of income back then because my parents used to cook banana cue and they will sell it in our school or in our Barangay.

Every weekend I and my father will also go to the market to sell our products from our farm - a father's garden in the creek. We used to sell young jackfruits and mature or ripe jackfruits too. We also sell banana and it's flowers plus other crops harvested in our garden like cassava, chayote, chili and many more.

Last Sunday, we visited our little farm - a father's garden in the creek and harvested different fruits - a treasure left by our father.

Yes! I considered fruits from the fruit trees planted by our father as a treasure he left for us.

He already left us one year by tomorrow but these fruits, these treasures are still here giving us some food and still helping our mother financially.

MARANG

Marang is one of the most common fruit tree he has planted. If I am not mistaken, we have more than 10 marang trees all in all.

Every year they gave a lot of fruits to us. I, my siblings and above all our mother enjoys it fruits. We can eat all we can if we harvest its fruits by ourselves.

My mother also sell most of the marang fruits to fruit buyer for only 10.00 ($0.2) per piece. Buyer will buy it in the same price small or big and they will be the one to harvest it.

My mother chose to sell its fruits so it won't be wasted because some of the marang trees is so hard for my brothers to climb. So she sell those fruits unreachable by my brother and it helps a lot to my mother financially.

Last Sunday, we harvested some marang fruits and one of my brother climb to get mature marang fruits.

We use some stick too with something to catch the fruits in it to reached marang fruits.

This is how we catch marang fruits. We use sack and we put our hands inside to catch the marang fruits.

We also got some ripe marang and we enjoyed eating it under it's tree.

COCONUT

My father also planted coconut trees and now we are enjoying its fruit too.

We even make coconut and gulaman drinks in the afternoon very suitable for the hot weather.

My mother used to sell the old or mature coconut too. Again it helps her financially and it seems my father is still here supporting us, his family.

BANANA

Our father also planted a lot of banana trees that every month my mother can harvest some of its fruits. My mother use to sell it too.

The picture above has fruits already and after few days this will be ready for harvest.

STAR APPLE

There is a star apple in our father's garden and this time it bears a lot of fruit. We get some through stick because we cannot climb in it because it's body is now so big.

OTHER TREES

My father also planted avocado, jackfruit, kamansi or breadnut which is similar to bread fruit, bamboo, cacao and many more. Sorry, I wasn't able to take some picture of it.

NEW PLANTS

Since our father left us, this garden, a little farm of him beside the creek means so much to us. Every plants, every fruits in there reminded us of him.

Since there are still more space, my brothers planted additional fruit trees there like avocado, rambutan, lansones.

My husband also bought durian recently and might be my brother and my mother planted it yesterday. Our father was not able to plant durian tree in there so now, we will be having durian tree there and many years from now if not us for sure our kids will benefit it fruits.

Planting fruit trees is also a good way of investment, a treasure to be passed in the next generation. Plant now and you will harvest its fruits in the years to come. Your grand children and even their grand children can benefit it as long as it will continue to bear fruits and the next generation will also take care of it.

Thanks to our father who planted those fruit trees in his garden and until now and for sure even in the years to come we will still enjoy the treasures he left for us.

All photos are mine. Some are screenshots from the video I have taken that day.

Thank you for reading. Let's plant for the next generation.
