HARVEST TIME ON THE HOMESTEAD ~~~ #HIVEGARDEN JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 2021

READY, SET, GO!

It's that time of year again to harvest the goodies from the gardens. We have enjoyed the fruits of our labor for most of July and August, picking those fresh herbs and veggies daily as they ripen to perfection.

I feature these herbs and vegetables because they were big hits this year. Rosemary, oregano and dill produced in abundance. I was able to use them fresh all summer, then processed a bunch to freeze and enjoy when winter sets in. The garlic this year was off the charts, with larger bulbs and a bumper crop. Oh, I do love garlic, use it almost everyday.

The newest member to our garden this year was kohlrabi.

Here's why I gave it a try.

" In 100 grams Kohlrabi contain 27.0 (113 kJ) calories, this only 1% of daily value. From Carbohydrate calories for 22.0 (92.1 kJ), From Fat 0.8 (3.3 kJ) and From Protein 4.1 (17.2kJ). So kohlrabi is very beneficial for the perfect diet.

Kohlrabi is a perfect dietary vegetable. It is low in calories but high in fiber. Consuming kohlrabi give you full longer effect in your health but no effects for your weight". That's what I'm talking about.

"Lowering Cholesterol. Cholesterol levels are obtained from a variety of foods that contains fat will increase cholesterol in the blood. Kohlrabi low in fat but high in fiber.

Lower Risk of Heart Disease. Good digestion will make the body have an ideal weight. In other words, distancing themselves from the risk of obesity. So that the fiber will help lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Maintain Healthy Skin. Fiber has the ability to move various types of toxins, bacteria and fungi in the gastrointestinal system, including that trigger acne and dull skin.

Prevent Colorectal Polyps. Colon polyps diseases caused by intestinal inflammation triggered by different types of food in the intestine because they can’t get out into the feces. Inflammation that persists and doesn’t get treatment then it will be a polyp. Fiber prevents buildup of food in the intestines.

In 100 grams kohlrabi, the content of vitamins are abundant. Vitamins are a group of organic compounds that small molecular weight amines have a vital function in the metabolism of every organism, which can not be produced by the body. Thus, vitamin absolutely must be supplied from our daily consumption. Some vitamins in kohlrabi are:

Vitamin A 36.0 IU or 1% DV
Vitamin C 62.0mg 103% DV
Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol) 0.5 mg 2% DV
Vitamin K 0.1mcg or 0% DV
Thiamin 0.1mg or 3% DV
Riboflavin 0.0mg or 1% DV
Niacin 0.4mg or 2% DV
Vitamin B6 0.2mg or 8% DV
Folate 16.0mcg or 4% DV
To be able to grow and develop, the body needs at least 13 kinds of vitamins, namely vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and B (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folate)."

There are other benefits that are not listed, just so many positives from what I have been reading.
I figured I would give it a shot to see if it would thrive in our region. It was a winner. Through the inspiration of @planttoplanks, I made a yummy slaw that paired nicely with grilled salmon with raspberry sauce.

Always a special treat, homemade salsa with vine ripened tomatoes.

Here's the bounty that went into this batch of a family favorite.

Now is the time to get every last gem from the garden beds and prepare for the cold months that will surely come before we know it. Although this growing season has been rainy, we still have an abundance to show off for our efforts.
Always tried and true, tomatoes. Everyday we bring in more, with lots of them still green on the vine. So saucy susey farm-mom gets to work in the kitchen to prepare the sauces or soups that are the result of having so many tomatoes ripe at the same time. There is only so much you can consume in a day.

We have some serious tomato πŸ… overload. I guess these bad boys like the rain.

On goes the pot of water, just after coffee, as I prepare to blanch, peel and de-seed all those luscious tomatoes. I call it a labor of love. It takes many pounds of tomatoes to reduce them down into a sauce and hours to prepare the tomatoes for the food processor. But there is nothing sweeter than fresh sauce.

It's very much like the maple syrup we make in March, with a ratio of 50 to 1, it takes 50 gallons of sap to make just one gallon of pure maple syrup. Truly, you have to enjoy the process. But to us farmers, so worth the effort.

All gardeners will agree, each growing season is different. #nature plays a role in what is a hit or miss.

Our biggest miss this year was carrots. This is the very first year that our carrots failed to thrive. We produced so many last harvest, that we still have some in the deep freeze, thank goodness. I use lots of carrots. They go into all my soups and stews, I juice them, green tops and all, very delicious and healthy too. I credit my clear skin and healthy hair to my intake of carrot and apple juice. We have been juicing raw fruits and vegetables for over 20 years now and have enjoyed good health from it's benefit.

But such is life here on the farm, we roll with the punches and count our blessings. @thebigsweed and I are #silverbloggers that know the value of peace of mind, love in your heart , strong bodies and a soulmate.

So you know what? The big disappointment is now a learning experience. We already understand the new location of the carrot bed did not get enough sunlight, period. Solutions can be simple if we remember...LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

Gardening is awesome, so why not keep a journal about it on the blockchain. It's nice to share. Come join us @ladiesofhive and @splatts, would like to see what you grow.
