Vegetable Gardening In School Update

The love of gardening is a seed that was once sown that never dies but never grows to the enduring happiness that the love of gardening gives. – Gertrude Jekyll

Hello, dear hive friends especially to the all gardeners in this community. How are you? I hope you are all safe and in good health always. Today I would like to give an update on my vegetable garden in school after the evaluation. I mentioned in my previous blog that I restored the vegetable garden in my assigned area for the coming evaluation. So we had an evaluation last April 28, 2023. I was not so prepared for the evaluation or assessment day, especially on the documents aspect since during that week I was frequently absent from school due to health concerns of my husband, and on the day of the evaluation, I was absent because my husband was admitted to Cebu Provincial Hospital in Bogo City last April 27, 2023. When the evaluators visited my assigned area I did not meet and greet them personally. Despite everything, I am still lucky because I am in sixth place out of 19 contestants.

After the evaluation, we did not stop taking care of our garden. We continued providing nourishment to our plants so that we can have a plentiful harvest. And as I've mentioned previously that the purpose of this gardening project is for the feeding program for our school learners who were wasted and severely wasted.

Different Varieties of Vegetables Planted in My Assigned Area

Upland Kangkong

I choose this variety of kangkong since it grows well in any type of soil. And it can withstand even in warm weather. Before the evaluation, my kangkong was newly planted. I decided to grow kangkong in that area very late. This time I'm glad that they are now fully grown and very healthy I harvested 5 bundles already.

Sweet Potato( Back Garden)

The concept of gulayan sa paaralan or vegetable is no vacant spaces inside the school campus except the ground lawn. Therefore it is one of the requirements that the back portion must be cultivated and planted. In my case, my back is fully cemented since the area was utilized for a septic tank. So I decided to grow Sweeet Potato in a sack. I required 1 sack planted with sweet potato for every learner. I have 48 learners,o I have 48 sacks of sweet potatoes at the back.

Seedlings

Each teacher was required to have a mini nursery. So, I sow several types of seeds in a seedbox. One of which is tomato. Now I have tomato and pepper seedlings ready for the next scheduled planting.

Garden Quotes/Saying

Aside from installing a fence, and adding recyclable bottles to add beauty to my garden and a wow effect, I also install quotes about the garden. This is my way of letting my learners know and reflect on the importance of gardening.
