That's fitting because today I planted my dahlias in the garden that I found in the basement of my newly occupied house at that time, exactly 4 years ago.
2018:
They are very old dahlias and the landlords had told me that the lady who had lived there before me planted them every year anew outdoors in a large wooden trough. So I had done the same and since then I am in love with dahlias!
This is what they looked like in my garden in Wolfratshausen in 2018. Dahlias bloom in our latitudes throughout the summer, into the fall and are also very popular with bees and bumblebees.
There were three varieties of dahlias, one yellow / orange, which blooms very densely, and two rather simple, one in white and one in red. The red one never bloomed much, but the other two were always a blast to bloom.
In autumn, you can still prolong the flowering a little by protecting the plants from the cold of the night, but sooner or later you have to dig the tubers out of the ground and overwinter them in a cool, dark place without soil.
When I left Wolfratshausen in December 2020, I broke off a few parts of each of the large dahlia tubers, this is very easy and does not harm the plant.
These tubers moved with me from Bavaria to Austria. Last year they bloomed unfortunately not so beautiful, they probably had a wrong place here with bright sun the whole day, so I choose a different place for this year.
2022:
Today was the time and they were allowed to come out from their winter quarters into the open air! It is quite interesting that the tubers "know" exactly when they begin to sprout again in the spring.
I cut off the old scrawny branches, then you can already see the tubers with their little sprouts, which you can now put in the ground.
Normally I would have let the shoots already peek out of the ground, but since it is still quite cool at night, I piled them with soil as a precaution and then covered the whole thing with a fleece.
There were a few tubers left, I think I'll plant them in a pot on my patio. Haha, someday I need a bigger terrace for all the plants ;-)

Dahlien pflanzen für den Flashbackfriday
Heute ist der Tag 29 von 30 täglichen Posts für den Hive Blog Post Month April 2022 und das Thema das Tages ist - 4 Jahre zurück zu gehen.
Das trifft sich gut, denn heute habe ich meine Dahlien wieder im Garten gepflanzt, die ich vor genau 4 Jahren im Keller meines damals neu bezogenen Hauses gefunden hatte.
2018:
Es sind sehr alte Dahlien und die Vermieter hatten mir erzählt, die Dame die vor mir dort gewohnt hatte hat sie jedes Jahr aufs Neue im Freien in einen großen Holztrog gepflanzt. Also hatte ich das auch gemacht und seit damals bin ich verliebt in Dahlien!
So sahen sie also im Jahr 2018 in meinem Garten in Wolfratshausen aus.
Dahlien blühen in unseren Breiten den ganzen Sommer hindurch, bis in den Herbst hinein und sind auch von Bienen und Hummeln sehr beliebt.
Es waren drei Sorten Dahlien, eine gelbe/orange, die sehr dicht blüht und zwei eher einfache, eine in weiß und eine in rote. Die Rote hat nie viel geblüht, aber die anderen beiden waren immer ein wahres Feuerwerk an Blütenpracht.
Im Herbst kann man die Blüte noch ein wenig verlängern, indem man die Pflanzen vor der Kälte der Nacht schützt, aber über kurz oder lang muss man die Knollen aus der Erde ausgraben und an einem kühlen, dunklen Ort ohne Erde überwintern.
Als ich im Dezember 2020 Wolfratshausen verlassen habe, habe ich von jeder der großen Dahlien Knollen ein paar Teile abgebrochen, das geht sehr einfach und schadet der Pflanze nichts.
Diese Knollen sind dann mit mir mit von Bayern nach Österreich übersiedelt. Im Vorjahr blühlten sie leider nicht so schön, sie hatten wohl einen falschen Platz hier mit voller Sonne den ganzen Tag über, also habe ich für dieses Jahr einen neuen Platz im Garten gewählt.
2022:
Heute nun war es soweit und sie durften wieder aus ihrem Winter Quartier hinaus ins Freie! Es ist ganz interessant, dass die Knollen genau "wissen", wann sie im Frühling beginnen wieder auszutreiben.
Ich habe die alten dürren Äste abgeschnitten, dann sieht man schon die Knollen mit ihren kleinen Sprösslingen, die man nun in die Erde setzen kann.
Normalerweise hätte ich die Triebe schon aus der Erde gucken lassen, aber da es nachts immer noch recht kühl ist, habe ich sie vorsichtshalber mit Erde angehäufelt und danach das ganze mit einem Flies abgedeckt.
Ein paar Knollen waren noch übrig, die werde ich wohl auf meiner Terrasse in einen Topf pflanzen. Haha, irgendwann brauche ich eine größere Terrasse für all die Pflanzen ;-)
Jetzt hoffe ich, dass es bald wärmer wird und sie diesen neuen Platz mögen, damit sie wieder so schön blühen können wie in Wolfratshausen.
