The Day Before - Survival MMO Preview

The Day Before appeared out of nowhere earlier this year and left me stunned.
Can a small Russian studio really come up with such good graphics or is this just a big bubble?
And how about the gameplay?

Meanwhile we are a little smarter, but The Day Before is still a mysterious veil and faces great skepticism from the players.
We will probably not know exactly until the release - but we already got some information and leaks here and there. Lets sum it up.

Story

The Day Before relies on the good old zombie post-apocalypse (long time no see, good old genre friend).
The US has been hit by a pandemic that has turned many people into violent zombies and we are right in the middle of it.
So far so unspectacular.

As survivor, you travel the open world and have only one goal: not to be eaten or shot by other survivors - yes PvP is a core component in this game.
You go in search of safe colonies to take a breather and to ally with other players.

Gameplay aspects

There are basically three main aspects that should create an unique and immersive world:

  • Survival: First of all, on the journey through the post-apocalyptic USA, you defend yourselves against the hordes of zombies, which, according to the developers, should function as "realistically" as possible. (Not sure how you would define a realistic zombie though)
So the should not be inhumanly fast or spray fountains of poison. In addition to the zombies, people also fight each other, because resources are scarce. You need warm clothing, food, crafting materials and ammunition.

  • Weather system: The dynamic weather should also play a major role. Your clothes have to protect you from the oncoming cold and storms which can make our survival hell. We still have to await actual gameplay to see how it all works out.

  • Open World: The open world should be more varied than you know it from the very similar The Division. You explore forests, mountains, settlements and rural areas next to the abandoned city. Various vehicles should also be available for this purpose.

The Day Before is an MMO, so you also meet other players with whom you can ally or antagonize.
There is enabled PvP all over the world - that means you also compete for loot and can steal from each other.
More detailed information on the PvP mode is currently still a long way off.

The zombie game was originally announced for PC via Steam.
In the meantime, however, versions for the next-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X have also been confirmed for release on June 21, 2022

In the meantime you can take a quick look at the relvealed release trailer

Even though I really like the setting I am not sure about the PvP-allways on aspect. This might turn into some really frustrating moments given the toxic community we have to face in certain games when it comes to PvP.
Maybe they will implement an option for opting out of PvP like in The Division.

Ultimately, most MMOs with perma PvP failed and lost their player base pretty fast. Lastly New World, the MMO from Amazon games, reworked their game design and implemented a whole bunch of PvE components after the first players from the closed alpha clearly said that the aspect of perma PvP is nowhere near enjoyable.

The official website (https://www.daybeforegame.com/) however does not reveal too much at this point. Sadly.
