Final Fight for Sega Genesis WIP Released, Genesis Does What Nintendon’t

Back in the day, the early 1990’s, Capcom was on top of the world. They had a few franchises that were household names, Final Fight, Street Fighter 2, Mega Man, etc. When the Super Nintendo was announced and Capcom made it clear that Final Fight was coming home on that platform, my 16-bit purchase was decided. I did not have a ton of money, so I had to choose one or the other. Rather than get a Sega Genesis earlier, I went with the Nintendo Game Boy (the version that came with Legend of Zelda packed in). Then Final Fight coming to SNES made that next console purchase easier than I thought it would be. Then, I learned of the cutbacks, the stuff to be left out and I thought to myself, why don’t they do a Genesis version too/instead?

Fixing decades old mistakes

The Super Nintendo version was crippled from the start. For starters, fans lost Guy and were limited to Cody or Haggar. Then, get this, Nintendo wanted the women enemies removed, as well as alcohol references, name changes for bosses, and more.

Along the way, Capcom had to cut a whole level from the Super Nintendo version. As news was published in gaming mags like Gamefan and Electronic Gaming Monthly, I lost interest in Final Fight.

I still bought a Super Nintendo (Super Mario World was an amazing selling point for me). I already had a deposit on a copy of Final Fight for SNES as well with Walmart, so I was in, even if a little less excited than before.

With this remake for the Sega Genesis, we are finally going to see a true to arcade version in the home.

Holy cow, this is great

Having played the demo, video embedded above, I can honestly say, this version of Final Fight rocks. According to Indie Retro News, the developers are working with arcade assets.

They are putting back in Roxy and Poison, little bits of blood, and correctly naming characters among many other things. Level 4 is also on the city map.
