The backdrop is the 40s, one of the most violent periods of history with World War II in the background and the allies trying to give a desperate offensive against the German forces, we are in Italy where we have been assigned a war camp to finish with an Axis force that is hidden in a fortress, when we arrive a brutal fire opens for which a few seconds it seems that hell itself has been unleashed, We have them against the wall but it is difficult to give the final blow, until we hear a loudspeaker asking the Italian forces to lay down their weapons, it is not us, but one of the "families", Italian capos who even in war controlled the area, the soldiers obey almost instantly and proving a concept that is reflected throughout the game of Mafia 2, you do not need to shoot a single bullet when your best weapon is your presence, and the fear that you instill in others. It is a scene that could be better treated but that perfectly portrays what Vito Escaleta (the protagonist) will be looking for once he gets home: Respect.

Mafia 2 is a title that has not taken all the flowers that I think it deserves, despite being an open world and mimic many of the characteristics of a GTA I think it does a sublime job with both its setting and its story, the gangsters of the 40-50s were not exactly something new in the video game, but the way in which 2k Czech portrays the balance of power and the impulses of each of the families of criminals makes it much more interesting to play this game, it puts us in a dark world where nothing is what it seems and although we start with jobs of little renown little by little we are moving to the most violent crimes where morality takes a definite step towards the criminal life of gangster, all with the consequences that this brings for us and our acquaintances.

In case it wasn't clear enough, Mafia 2 is a shooter, and a good one at that. Perhaps it lacks that little push forward that other titles have but the shootouts in Mafia 2 are also intense, varied and with a lot of background game and that we can see us involved in different situations where we will not only have to be aware of shooting but also move around the stage to not be overcome by enemy gangs, the game combines quite well the fast pace of the shootings with other calmer where we will have to follow a target and wait before executing it. These are the missions that have the most juice as the dialogue shines in these moments where we can see the characters question their actions over and over again, Vito and Joe in particular are characters that have a lot of influence from the classic wannabe Gansters but they work very well with every step the game takes.

The vehicles are another important part of the game not so much for the story and the dialogues that can be there, but for how they are driven, we will spend a considerable part of the game from vehicle to vehicle and it is great to feel that they are driven in a way quite close to a simulation, the vehicles feel your weight and the actions behind the wheel you do and that contributes a lot to the experience, plus we will have to spend quite some time driving them to perfect them as no car is similar to another, a refreshing touch also are the models true to their time plus also the graphics and modeling they have.

Mafia II - Softonic | Review

The town of Vito and company is what makes me the most noise of the game, because while we have some weapon and clothing stores that we can see along the map, I feel that as we progress we realize that the city is a bit empty, the NPCs at best give us the feeling of the opposite but it is difficult to make life in this city when you do not have side quests or some kind of substitute, here I see a wasted opportunity to put some kind of casino or other service that we could use being members of the Mafia, or at least having some set of missions apart from the main story.

Mafia II - Photogram

Although with all the negatives that MAFIA 2 has I still think it is a game that being a title similar to GTA is unmarked from it thanks to a very different atmosphere from the games I'm used to, some great and quite creative shootings and a story that resolves and develops very well each of its characters and even most likely will break the heart of more than one.
