If you are new to my channel, I review ROM Hacks. a ROM hack is when someone takes a [usually console] video game and edits the code to create a new game. It's actually not illegal to do this, and quite popular. As long as you don't sell a ROM HACK you are pretty much safe.
Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks are popular. Maybe because SM64 did so well when it launches so it's a classic. Maybe because the character moves like the long jump make it a fun template to make new levels with. Whatever the reason, there are many SM64 ROM Hacks! Today, I will be reviewing Return to Yoshi's Island 64. This was a stunning Hack with excellent map designs.
The overall design of this game is stunning. It's on the professional level of an official N64 game. The room that Mario starts in [after the warp room] is very detailed and well designed. There are tons of cool designs like an L and R on a bunk bed and Posters on the wall of Bowser. Three are references to Dr. Mario. There is a book shelf with video games and collectibles. The patching is very nice. There are some really nice [custom?] textures.
The level design is different than the original game. It's a bit more of an open level and less of a Parkour climb upwards. It reminds me of the level design of Banjo Kazooie a lot. The first few stars are easy to get. A lot of SM64 Hacks are too difficult and it doesn't feel like a real game. This feels more like a game that is an actual console release instead of a super difficult expert mode type experience. This game is really similar to the actual SM64 difficulty level.
There is a really cool old skool Mario style Parkour map in the middle of the first level.
The second level is a really cool under water level with a giant Sea Turtle. There is a really cool Industrial theme. There are a series of sealab type buildings that you have to swim between.
Overall I would give this game an 8/10. The designs of the levels, 3d models, patching etc. are AMAZING. The storyline/concept is interesting. The game isn't too difficult or easy. It's very playable. There are some really cool custom 3d assets like new types of trees and hybrid bunnies/goombas. ALso new powerups like the bomb hat above. There is also a really cool underwater version of the Coopa Shell. I played this game for a few hours and managed to score 8 stars. I am going to try and beat this ROM Hack. Maybe I will make a guide.
