Streets of Rage 4 - Visually beautiful and mechanically amazing [EN-ES]

ENGLISH V2.gif

Games of this style do not usually get my attention, as such the genre does not attract me much because after a few levels I tend to feel repetitive, however, with Streets of Rage I decided to make an exception for the simple fact of having played their first titles as a child and have enjoyed them a lot, recently I finally got to play the fourth installment and I left a pretty good taste in my mouth, so much so that I think it's worth talking a little about it.

1

I think the official term to define this genre is "BEAT 'EM UP", where basically the mechanics of the game lies in the close combat with a side design where we must always move from left to right, quite simple and I'm sure most will have played at least one title of this style. Street of Rage 4 does not deviate from this mechanic, but being a "current" title (2020) it does add a couple of new things that differentiate it from previous installments, such as the introduction of multiple special and even ultimate abilities.

2

As such you will start with four characters, you must select one of them to start the story, once you select it you can not change until you die or complete the level, a good thing is that the story of this title takes place as if the four characters were together, so no matter who you choose, both the animations and dialogue sequences will always make sense because the four characters will appear. In this type of game the story/plot isn't usually important in any way, so I'll skip talking about it and focus on what really makes it shine, its gameplay.

3

As for the combat specifically, it is an absolute marvel, I have not a single complaint, maybe it's because I have long time without playing something of this genre, but the wide possibility of making combinations of blows mixing them with skills is incredibly cool and gives you that shot of adrenaline when you get a sequence of perfect or very nice blows, so in this section has my tens. In addition to all this the introduction of a definitive ability seemed to me a very good touch and because you have limited uses you won't be able to abuse it so the game doesn't feel unbalanced at any time.

4

Something curious is that the normal skills, although they don't have limited uses, they do have an important cost, and that is that each normal skill you perform will subtract a little bit of life, so if you abuse them too much it can cost you dearly. Although if you don't have problems playing at 1 life you won't have any complications, since, even if you have little life and use an ability it can't kill you, the only way to die is by getting hurt by an explosion, fall or enemy blow.

5

Each character has an original fighting style, their combos, their skills, their ultimate, everything has a personal stamp that characterizes them. Some are fast, others are slow, but they do more damage and some are quite common, that is to say, you don't feel much speed, but neither slowness, we could say that they are simply standard.

6

As you advance in the story you will face different final bosses that will be in certain levels, these bosses as well as the main characters will have their own personal mechanics, so unlike previous installments here we will not see so many recycled movements. Some of them will even have small animations and their own thematic scenarios, like the police chief's office, for example.

7

Finally, I want to dedicate this last section to praise the design of this game, more specifically the characters, it is a marvel in 2D, everything looks beautiful, the way they walk, their skills, the combinations and movements they perform, everything is a visual delight that I hope you have been able to appreciate throughout this publication. The dialogue scenes, although very basic are quite good, the art they handle is very well polished and although it may not seem like it, they give that touch of drama to several moments of the story, so in my opinion they definitely managed to give the generational leap that this saga deserved.
