A few days ago started the Steam Next Fest, where there are many demos of games that are coming in the future. Walking around this festival I found several interesting ones that I kept to play. Among these demos was Metal Slug Tactics, a game I've been following for a while.
First of all: Aesthetically a beauty. I love the tactical genre, but I admit that part of why it caught my attention so much is because of the retro style it has with the pixel art.
So, the game is turn-based. We will have our team of 3 and we will have to position it where we want to start the battle. In each turn our characters will be able to perform two actions, move and attack. After this will end and the enemy turn will begin. Each character will have his own style, one will go with a machine gun, another will throw small grenades. The type of weapon will represent the distance and the area where we will be able to shoot.
The demo only has the first area to play, when we enter we will see a small map where we will have different scenarios where we can go to start a fight. Whenever we finish a fight in one of these scenarios, access to the next one will be unlocked.
We will not always have the same objective, there will be scenarios where the goal is to kill all enemies, but there will also be times where we must escort an npc to the end of the map or kill only the marked enemies.
There will also be combo attacks that, in order to execute them, we will have to place two or three of our characters in the correct position, with a view of the enemy. Visually these attacks are nothing to write home about, they will simply fire all of our limbs and cause a lot of damage.
On the other hand, each member will have two types of attack, one with the main weapon and the other with the secondary weapon. The main weapon is infinite, we can always attack with it, but the secondary weapon will have limited ammunition, so once we spend it all, we will not be able to use it. This ammunition will be recharged by completing fights, although not all of them will give it as a reward.
In addition to the two attack types, each character will have a handful of special abilities, which will be things like moving enemies out of position, healing, moving around or simply dealing damage.
As we play we will level up, and each level will give us some advantage for our character, such as ignoring the enemy's cover when doing damage, for example. As we level up we will also gain a new special ability, which can be passive or active.
Something I didn't know is that the game is a roguelite, all the upgrades we get when we level up will be lost when we die. Also, when we die we will return to our base and we will be able to spend money to obtain new special abilities and permanent advantages in exchange for money, which we obtain by completing battles.
Here the final boss will appear after completing several scenarios, 4 in total. Once he appears we can only attack him. In this case, the boss will be a kind of giant warship.
The fight against the final boss will be in a scenario full of many enemies, each turn the boss will aim at several areas and shoot in the next turn, so the fight will consist of moving around the stage avoiding ending the turn in the red areas, while we try to hurt him. Once we defeat him, we will be victorious and the demo will end.
Having finished the demo, I have the feeling that, when the game comes out, it will be similar to one of those classic action and strategy games that we have all played at some point. Another thing that surprised me for the better was that, many times, the levels will require you to analyze your moves well, if we go without thinking we may end up dying. Although I don't know if I felt this because it is the demo and I didn't have many advantages unlocked, maybe later, having more skills and passives, it will become easier, as in almost any roguelite.
