Did Half Life really revolutionize the history of video games? (ENG/ESP)

➤ A topic that has generated a lot of debate with myself has been to define in a certain way if Half Life was really a real change for both the history of video games, or in itself an entire genre, the shooter genre. For its time a genre not very exploited, but well recognized by games like Doom, a game that marked a before and after, and in fact served as inspiration for the creation of Half Life, but... Half Life did what Doom couldn't, and I think that's what makes it unique.

➤ There are a lot of things we have to take into account, first the era. Half Life ended up coming out completely in 1998, a time when we were just beginning to see the real evolution of video games in leaps and bounds to computers. Nowadays we can't expect the best graphic quality or an extremely advanced gameplay, but... Half Life did it. That is to say, it is not the best nowadays, but it preserves much of its value and what made it a great game for its time, being a game with an irrefutable and unattainable success.

➤ At that time it was difficult to see a video game that adapted well to the 3D world, and not only that, that kept a story. The most common, at least in the shooter genre, was a game where we simply went around killing and killing, the technical limitations did not allow much beyond that. Even so, all this also affected a lot in the creation of Half Life. Going through many test versions and changes of graphic engines or redesigning many of the things. Including the elimination of many things thought, enemies and even the same character of Gordon Freeman, who before was thought in another way. It was a hard work to create what we know today as a renowned saga, not forgotten, but rather excessively well cared for.

➤ The first versions of Half Life were very different from what ended up being the final product, but it does not mean that it was bad, but rather that they focused on making it in the best way. As I mentioned before, the leap towards 3D games was not very seen for those times, so the graphic quality of Half Life was a very outstanding point for its time, it was very pleasant to the eye, allowing large environments very well detailed and a gameplay that felt free, despite the fact that at the beginning of the game we are locked in a laboratory. The simple start sequence when we see the majesty of the resonance machine already gave a lot to talk about regarding the visual section and its great evolution.

➤ The gameplay was its key point, as I mentioned before Half Life was a game that managed to create a video game with a consolidated story and a good gameplay ahead. Something very rarely seen. And regardless of the incredible quality of the story, it is a huge world and very difficult to explain. Many of the mechanics implemented in Half Life were impressive at the time, such as the interaction with other characters, an own interaction where we can directly talk to them, make them follow us or fulfill activities that are necessary for us, such as opening a door, a code or simply help us kill zombies. Creating an artificial intelligence that in a way felt natural with the game, even though it sometimes has certain problems, which in the end ends up being understandable given the limitations of the moment. The base is very simple, yes, a first person shooter video game, but not like any other, for its time this was the step into the future. The gameplay was very fast and frantic, along with a good variety of weapons and each fulfilling different functions, not everything was based on action, as we will also go through many moments where we will face different types of puzzles or events that we have to solve by making use of logic and interaction our environment, that was also another addition, being able to interact with almost everything around us. Like moving boxes, pressing buttons or mechanisms, among many other things.

➤ Half Life had many qualities that are able to impress anyone and think, did this game really come out in 1998? We face a good amount of enemies, mostly enemies coming from Xen, basically creatures from another world. We will encounter a good amount of them, each one completely different from the other. But the most outstanding are those that we can consider as a kind of bosses, huge beasts that position us in moments of great tension, with an incredible detail that makes you see the love that they really put into the game. The most significant are the gargantua, a giant blue beast that in my opinion is like an armadillo XD. It's quite lethal, and difficult to kill, it won't be able to be killed in the conventional way. And one of the most striking ones, which doesn't have a specific name, is simply a bunch of tentacles with giant spikes that we will have to face in one part of the game. They are quite difficult to kill, and we will have to complete a puzzle in the middle of the battle to do so.

➤ This is just a little bit of how much Half Life really is, the best way to see it is to play it on your own. For a better experience we have the existence of Black Mesa, a completely faithful remake of the first game, it is a much better experience and I really recommend it. You can see more of this version by clicking here. I think Half Life was a completely unique game for its time, maybe now it doesn't feel so different from everything we see nowadays, but it still keeps all its essence. Thank you very much for reading, see you in the next post!

Half Life lo logró.
