My retro video gaming collection | Retro Gaming Blogging Challenge #13

Second to last post in the Retro Gaming Blogging Challenge! What a ride it's been.

It's time to delve deep down into the treasure trove and take a look at my retro gaming library as a whole. Which consoles did I own and what games accompanied it? This post will be based around lists and some general commentary. I'll categorize the post into each console and list the games underneath.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)

The SNES was as mentioned in the first post of this challenge my first video game console. It was a console that stayed with me for years. Accompanying me through both the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo Gamecube era. It was sadly boxed down eventually althout it took around 10 years.

Even though I had and used the SNES for almost 10 years I didn't really have a lot of games for it. For the first couple of years we would lease games at the video game store for some reason. I also think that I've simply just forgotten about some of them.

The games I know I owned were:

That's actually it. I can't remember if I owned the rest of the games I played or if they were just borrowed. The rest of the games I can remember having played are:

I think that's it. For some reason I thought this list would be much longer. I somehow remember the SNES as a console I had with a lot of games but apparently not. I've played more SNES games than this though but that was after taking an interest in retro gaming and playing through emulators.

Nintendo 64

The SNES was great but the Nintendo 64 was simply better. It opened up a whole new world in 3D. Some of my best memories from this early age of gaming stems from the Nintendo 64. The SNES lost its place as my favorite thing for a while after I got the Nintendo 64 but it was always there. I would still fire up the SNES to take Super Mario World for a spin or try to beat Donkey Kong Country.

I definitely had more games for the Nintendo 64 than I did for the SNES. I also played more games on the Nintendo 64 due to most of my friends also having the console. We would exchange games and borrow from each others.

The games I owned were:

Those were just my own games. Still I experienced way more games through the exchange I mentioned earlier. I have fond memories of games like:

Playstation 1

The only console in my retro gaming collection that was not made by Nintendo. I ended up owning this one rather randomly. While I of course wouldn't mind having one it wasn't a console I had on my wishlist. I was still thrilled to find out one day that my dad had bought a Playstation 1 alongside a ton of games from one of his friends.

I didn't really use the Playstation 1 a whole lot. It was kinda placed in the shadow of my Nintendo 64. Still I do have some fond memories of the games I had for it.

The games I owned were:

As I'm listing these games I start to realize that I may be mixing them up a bit. I'm not quite sure if I had the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games for the Playstation 1 or the Nintendo 64. These two consoles released a lot of the same games while also having exclusives. This could be true for some of the other games as well.

Game Boy / Game Boy Color / Game Boy Advance / Nintendo DS

I'm gonna go ahead and pile all of the handhelds together. A lot of these games were compatible with each others so it just makes sense.

The Game Boys were awesome companions for several reasons. They were handheld and could be played pretty much anywhere. Long car ride? No problem, bring your Gameboy. Want to visit a friend but still play video games? Bring your Game Boy and play together. Being told to sleep but want to play video games? Game Boy under the covers! In the waiting room for the dentist? No problem! Game Boy!

I have fond memories of me and my friends playing the game boy together in the strangest of places. From something as simple as each others couches to out in the forest. We would go up to the barn and play the Game Boy while laying in the hay. It was so amazing that this was possible.

Nintendo Gamecube

The last on todays list. The last console I owned that arguably can be considered retro. Including the Nintendo DS in the above section might have already been pushing the boundaries a little.

The Nintendo Gamecube was awesome. Most of my friends went for the Playstation 2 instead but I was faithful to Nintendo. Nintendo simply has the best exclusives. Nothing even comes close to the Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda series. I feel the same even to this day. Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are some of the absolutely best games on the current generation.

The games I owned were:

Without a doubt the console I had the most games on. Largely due to getting older and getting hands on my own money. I didn't have to go begging anymore or rely to heavily on birthday and Christmas presents.

Well there we go. A lot of games. I realized as I was halfway through the post that this might not be that interesting of a read. It felt like I was making these lists more for myself than an audience, but oh well. That's how the post ended up.

To answer the question of todays topic; how big was your retro gamer collection? Pretty damn big.

Only one more post to go in the Retro Gaming Blogging Challenge after this! Next time we'll be taking a look at what retro games I would like to see remastered. I tough topic to touch on. Some games are so great that perhaps they should just go unsullied into the history books. At the same time it would be awesome to play them with todays technological standards. I'm gonna have to dwell on that one for a bit.
