The game was conceived by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin, who founded Naughty Dog and led the development of the game.

The game follows the adventures of Crash Bandicoot, a genetically modified marsupial who must rescue his girlfriend Tawna and stop the evil plans of Dr. Neo Cortex.
