When I was a kid, I loved to play Jaws Unleashed. For those who may not know, in Jaws Unleashed, you play as a shark. It was an amazing and bloody game. I remember swimming around for hours, dragging surfers down to the bottom of the ocean, and just letting them go to watch them try to swim up to the surface, as they bled and drowned.
Maneater caught my attention a while back when it was still in development. I heard that it was a spiritual successor to Jaws Unleashed, and that was enough to get me interested in it. However, I quickly forgot about it until the other day. I decided to pick it up and give it a go to see if it measured up to one of my favorite childhood games!
The story is simple. A shark hunter by the name of Scaly Pete ends up capturing your mother and kills her. In the process of gutting her, he finds you in her stomach and decides to throw you back in the ocean. But not before taking his harpoon and making a long cut on your side, so that he could identify and hunt you later. The story takes place in a “t.v” show setting. The T.V show follows Scaly Pete, and also you. Almost every action you do gets narrated at some point.
For the life of me, I couldn’t place who the narrator was. The voice seemed so familiar, but I just couldn’t place it. Then it hit me! As a HUGE Archer fan, I realized the voice was of my favorite T.V wimp, Cyril Figus! It was Chris Parnell who was voicing the narrator!

The game is really repetitive. It’s an open world game, and your job is to pretty much cause terror. You need to eat people and other marine life. This is pretty much what the quests consist of. Throughout the game, you “age” at certain levels. First you start off as a small shark, then level up to a teen, adult, elder, and eventually Mega. With each new stage of life, you gain size and are able to take down smaller enemies easier. When first starting out, it will take a few bites to kill a fish, but as you get bigger, and the fish get smaller, all it takes is one chomp.
The combat is simple. I mean, this isn’t a game to be taken too seriously. There’s really only two moves you use for attacking, which is biting, and your tail whip, which are controlled by the RMB and the LMB. I mentioned before you level, and you’ll need to as you’ll run into bigger fish that are higher levels than you, and can completely wreck you. When you do kill other fish such as the “Apex” ones (They’re like area bosses) you unlock new mutations which are the games “gear.”
The game also has an “Infamy” system. The more humans you kill, risks you the wraith of the shark hunters. Once your threat meter is full, the shark hunters will look for you. What’s different here is that there are a few different levels of infamy, and before you advance to the next one, you need to deal with the current levels “boss”. To be honest, the bosses are just named shark hunters, and as easy to deal with.
Now let me get to the reason I bought this game, and that’s to answer my question whether this is really a spiritual successor to Jaws Unleashed. And the answer I have to give is kind of? This might be because of my Nostalgia glasses, but Jaws Unleashed had a lot of awesome features that this game doesn’t. The one that pops into mind is the ability to eat people’s limbs. You can’t do that in this game, instead you just munch down on all of them.
Another thing that comes to mind is how the marine life acts in Jaws Unleashed. If you kill a person in Jaws unleashed and there are other sharks around, they’ll all rush to the smell of blood, and potentially attack you. Along with that, the boss fights in the game were memorable, while the ones in Maneater were mediocre at best.
One of my favorite stages in Jaws Unleashed was one where you were in an aquarium. You had to bust out, and you do that by flooding the aquarium. At the end of the level, you need to fight an orca whale. And I loved the fact that Maneater references this by having one of these Apex fish be an orca whale, that you fight inside of an old aquarium.
Overall, this game isn’t worth the listed price on steam. On Steam it is listed for $45(CAD), I however got it through cdkeys.com(this isn’t sponsored or anything of the sorts. I think it’s just fair I list where I got the game from) for $6.00, and I was glad I did. It took me 7 hours to complete the story, and the side quests. It’s not a very long game, and for the price of $45, it’s not all that impressive. I would have been pissed if I bought it full price. It is a good, fun game that you can play while having your mind shut off, but eventually it does get boring doing the side quests to level up, as they’re either one of three things, kill X amount of fish, people, or Kill this “mini boss”.
If you don’t have something playing in the background like music or a YouTube video, you’re going to get bored quickly . It is a good game, but not for the listed price. I’d say don’t pay more than $20 bucks top for this game, because in all honesty it’s not a game worth $45. I hope you enjoyed this review!

Cuando era niño, me encantaba jugar Jaws Unleashed. Para aquellos que no lo sepan, en Jaws Unleashed, juegas como un tiburón. Fue un juego increíble y sangriento. Recuerdo haber nadado durante horas, arrastrando a los surfistas hasta el fondo del océano y simplemente dejándolos ir para verlos tratar de nadar hacia la superficie, mientras sangraban y se ahogaban.
Maneater me llamó la atención hace un tiempo cuando aún estaba en desarrollo. Escuché que era un sucesor espiritual de Jaws Unleashed, y eso fue suficiente para que me interesara. Sin embargo, rápidamente lo olvidé hasta el otro día. ¡Decidí recogerlo y probarlo para ver si estaba a la altura de uno de mis juegos favoritos de la infancia!
La historia es sencilla. Un cazador de tiburones llamado Scaly Pete acaba capturando a tu madre y la mata. Por mi vida, no pude ubicar quién era el narrador. La voz parecía tan familiar, pero simplemente no podía ubicarla. ¡Entonces me golpeó! Como ENORME fanático de Archer, me di cuenta de que la voz era de mi debilucho favorito de la televisión, ¡Cyril Figus! ¡Era Chris Parnell quien estaba expresando al narrador!

Al principio, se necesitarán algunos bocados para matar a un pez, pero a medida que creces y el pez se hace más pequeño, todo lo que se necesita es un mordisco.
El combate es sencillo. Quiero decir, este no es un juego para ser tomado demasiado en serio. En realidad, solo hay dos movimientos que usas para atacar, que es morder, y tu látigo de cola, que están controlados por el RMB y el LMB. Mencioné antes de subir de nivel, y tendrás que hacerlo, ya que te encontrarás con peces más grandes que tienen niveles más altos que tú y pueden destruirte por completo. Cuando matas a otros peces como los "Apex" (son como jefes de área), desbloqueas nuevas mutaciones que son el "equipo" del juego.
El juego también tiene un sistema de "Infamia". Cuantos más humanos mates, te arriesgas al espectro de los cazadores de tiburones. Una vez que tu medidor de amenazas esté lleno, los cazadores de tiburones te buscarán. Lo que es diferente aquí es que hay algunos niveles diferentes de infamia, y antes de avanzar al siguiente, debes lidiar con el "jefe" de los niveles actuales. Para ser honesto, los jefes solo se llaman cazadores de tiburones y son fáciles de tratar.
Ahora permítanme llegar a la razón por la que compré este juego, y eso es para responder a mi pregunta sobre si este es realmente un sucesor espiritual de Jaws Unleashed. ¿Y la respuesta que tengo que dar es algo así? Esto podría deberse a mis lentes Nostalgia, pero Jaws Unleashed tenía muchas características increíbles que este juego no tiene. El que me viene a la mente es la capacidad de comer las extremidades de las personas. No puedes hacer eso en este juego, en lugar de eso, simplemente los comes todos.
Otra cosa que me viene a la mente es cómo actúa la vida marina en Jaws Unleashed. Si matas a una persona en Tiburón desatado y hay otros tiburones alrededor, todos correrán hacia el olor a sangre y potencialmente te atacarán. Junto con eso, las peleas de jefes en el juego fueron memorables, mientras que las de Maneater fueron mediocres en el mejor de los casos.
Una de mis etapas favoritas en Jaws Unleashed fue aquella en la que estabas en un acuario. Tenías que reventar, y lo haces inundando el acuario. Al final del nivel, debes luchar contra una ballena orca. Y me encantó el hecho de que Maneater hace referencia a esto al hacer que uno de estos peces Apex sea una ballena orca, con la que peleas dentro de un viejo acuario.
En general, este juego no vale el precio indicado en Steam. En Steam está listado por $ 45 (CAD), sin embargo, lo obtuve a través de cdkeys.com (esto no está patrocinado ni nada por el estilo. Creo que es justo que mencione de dónde obtuve el juego) por $ 6.00, y yo me alegré de haberlo hecho. Me tomó 7 horas completar la historia y las misiones secundarias. No es un juego muy largo, y por el precio de $45, no es tan impresionante. Me habría enojado si lo hubiera comprado a precio completo. Es un juego bueno y divertido que puedes jugar mientras tienes la mente apagada, pero eventualmente se vuelve aburrido hacer las misiones secundarias para subir de nivel, ya que son una de tres cosas, matar X cantidad de peces, personas, o Mata a este "mini jefe".
Si no tiene algo que se reproduzca de fondo, como música o un video de YouTube, se aburrirá rápidamente. Es un buen juego, pero no por el precio indicado. Yo diría que no pagues más de $20 dólares por este juego, porque honestamente no es un juego que valga $45. ¡Espero que hayas disfrutado esta reseña!
