Motorhead - A hidden racing video game from the 90s

In the late 90's there were many video games of the racing genre which were very successful, among them we have Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit, Gran Turismo, among others. Despite how excellent they were in many ways, their overwhelming sales made a great consequence in this industry, as they left out of sight of many players other games of this style, which had all the tools to be one of the favorites, a very clear example can be seen with Motorhead: High Velocity Entertainment.

This video game is one of the hidden gems of the 90's, which was released for two platforms, for the first PlayStation and Microsoft Windows. Both versions are very similar in certain technical aspects, but the balance in the visual section leans to the PC, however, no matter which one you play, both will make you feel a fresh experience in driving.

Motorhead: High Velocity Entertainment did not try at any time to resemble other racing games, but it was inevitable to compare them with them that already had enough ground dominated in video games, being something similar to the well-known Ridge Racer, but with a feeling of speed that transmitted the video game Wipeout, thanks to a small option regarding its refresh rate.

In the PSX version you could choose whether to run the game at 30 or 60 FPS, something that at that time was very strange to see in a game for a console, if you chose 30 FPS more vehicles appeared on screen, because it was less load on the CPU of the console, however, the 60 FPS mode made you feel one of the best experiences in terms of speed and fluidity, but you would sacrifice less competitors, as it demanded enough power to the PSX processor.

Those responsible for programming Motorhead: High Velocity Entertainment was a company called Digital Illusions CE or also known as DICE, this being their second car racing game, something quite daring on their part because previously they were only dedicated to the development of Pinball and platform games, among them we can mention Pinball Dreams (1992) or Benefactor (1994).

Thanks to the development of Motorhead, Dice had enough experience and confidence to be able to develop games of this genre in the future, something very successful, since in 2002 they launched a video game that left every fan of Rally racing totally surprised, it was RalliSport Challenge, a highly recommended title which is available for the first Xbox as well as for the Microsoft Windows system.

It is here when you notice the great importance of a game that almost nobody knows, it served as a previous experience to create a masterful work in the future. Motorhead: High Velocity Entertainment is still a very playable videogame even today in any of its versions, but beyond this it has a very important merit, this makes it a very special game that should be present in the minds of the players of yesteryear.
