Game review: Risk of Rain 2 (2019)

Hey there, you wholesome whores of Hive. Back again today to go over a game that I'm assuming most of you haven't even heard of, or even tried out, probably. It's called Risk of Rain 2. Risk of Rain 2 is a third person shooter/roguelike game that was developed by Hoppo Games and published by Gearbox Software. Now, I'll be up front with everyone that I never played the original Risk of Rain game. I've barely played any roguelike games before, besides a few like Rogue Legacy, Enter the Gungeon, and stuff like that. So, obviously I don't jerk off over the genre where I have to play every title released within it.

I decided to play this on a whim after hearing a streamer talk about it, since I was bored as fuck and it sounded interesting. And, after having played it for awhile, I have to say. This shit will smack your thicc ass hard, bois.

This game is just heaps of fun to play. If you're looking for something that can end up being a time sink, this would be a great choice. You can easily find yourself sinking days worth of time into this game without actually getting even a molecule of boredom. Unlike most roguelike games, Risk of Rain 2 you can play a plethora of different characters, each of which has their own different abilities. Giving each of them their own unique styles that will make every playthrough entirely different feeling from one another. Some use guns, some use lasers, some just use their meaty ass hands. The options are all over the place. I can't say there's any particular character that I thought made my penis shrivel up and die or anything, but, some are definitely more fun to play on than others. Loader for example is perfect if you want to cosplay being someone from Attack on Titan while beating on some alien ass.

My favorite part of the game and probably it's best feature is the looting system. You plow your way through enemies throughout all the different stages, gather up money from plowing said enemies and then spend that on the chests that randomly spawn on the map and you get RNG based items. Maybe some of those items are insane, legendary grade items that will obliterate the fuck out of people. Or, maybe you'll get a crusty sock that smells like moldy semen that's basically worthless. Though, you can collect them all (That's a Pokemon joke, you idiots.) and trade them in for something better on a different stage as you move on. There's also these 3D printer type machines in the world that allow you to do the same thing with trading in items to grab the printed item if you need it for your build.

So, as you can probably tell, there's just a shit ton of options for builds in the game. Eventually leading you to have huge power spikes where you're basically God tier in terms of abilities. And, I do mean God tier. I feel like most games cap you at how strong they will allow your character to be when it comes to this kind of looting system. Probably thinking that the players will get bored if they get overpowered as hell and will stop playing. Risk of Rain 2 doesn't give a fuck about that though, and allows you to literally be so overpowered that everything just dies if it even points its nipples in your direction. Even on the hardest difficulty, it's still possible to basically one shot every boss you run across. Shit gets wild in this game.

The in game progression is also done pretty well in terms of unlocking things. You have to undertake some daunting tasks to unlock characters, and while I was saying you can be a God in this game, that doesn't mean it's easy by any means. This game is extremely difficult most of the time, so it can be challenging to unlock everything. It takes time to get powered up, and you can't come into this dojo being drunk off buttchugging PBR's. Because, shit can go sideways in an instant in this game. However, it feels so god damn rewarding once you actually do finish the challenges and unlock the characters. It's all just super fulfilling and I just think it helps makes the experience as a whole better.

I probably should talk about how hard this game is some more, because I definitely cannot warn you enough that this shit is difficult. If you're playing on the hardest difficulty and you even take your eyes off the screen for a second, you're probably going to die in that single second and have to start all over again from the beginning. This game gets to be pure fucking chaos in the later stages, which I love. This is especially so for the final boss in the game. Because, if you even drop your guard down for a moment and think you can relax, he will instantly slide two fingers up your rectum and marionette you like a puppet. But, being on edge just adds to the fun and makes it feel more rewarding when you slap him to death.

And, if you're worried once you beat the final boss you won't have anything to do in this game, then shut the fuck up and read on. Because, the final boss doesn't really mean shit in the long run here. There is still so much stuff to do in the game and accomplish, you'll be doing several playthroughs of this game if it hooks you at the start. This is definitely a game with tons of replayability, where you'll get your moneys worth out of it. One thing I'll say though is that the game doesn't have much of a narrative going on, though, there's a ton of lore to be found throughout the world if you're interested in looking for it. It's in the form of items/books you'll find and have to read to piece together things, but you don't have to digest all this info if you just wanna focus on blasting ass instead.

Overall, there's not much of anything that I can say this game sucks dick on. The nature of the game can be frustrating due to the RNG of item spawns, since you can just get non stop trash for awhile. But, that is just kind of what you should be expecting going into the game, it's the nature of the beast. If you want something with a strong narrative, then this won't tickle your ballsack or anything. The game is gameplay focused by far, and that's the core experience of it. So, this is definitely not going to be a game for everyone, but, for fans of roguelike games I think this is some top tier shit and I would highly recommend it.

So, until next time doods.

Later!
