Every Call of Duty fan who has ever played Zombies knows all about the Ray Gun. This iconic weapon was introduced in 2008 with World At War, arguably the greatest WWII COD game ever. This weapon looked as if an alien should be wielding it and it hit harder than any. human gun every thought of hitting. This is why the weapon has been locked to the Zombies mode.
This is the case no more, at least for a short period.
MWIII's new Vortex mode marks the very first time players will be able to use the Ray Gun in competitive multiplayer modes. The Ray Gun is a one-shot kill every single time. Vortex is a free-for-all mode where one Ray Gun is placed on the map. The rules of regular F4A still apply, except now the one who holds the Ray Gun will always be shown on the mini-map. You can go the entire match without the Ray Gun and still win, but who in their right mind would want to do that? This gun is bonkers.
Along with the Ray Gun, Vortex also introduces three map redesigns. Sporeyard, which is a darker version of Scrapyard. with gigantic glowing mushrooms surrounding the map. Then there is Tetanus, which is a radioactive version of Rust. Finally, we have Satan's Quarry, which is a hellish and on-fire version of Quarry. Each map looks amazing visually but plays just like their older versions.
In today's video, I will be playing a match of Vortex on each of the three new maps. My first match I played god-awful and didn't even get to shoot the Ray Gun one time. By match two I felt decently warmed up, but still didn't get to showcase the Ray Gun. Match number three is when I finally was able to get several kills with the Ray Gun.
Vortex is one of the coolest new modes added to Call of Duty in a very long time. It's only supposed to last a couple of weeks, but I wish they'd keep this mode in the game forever because it makes playing free-for-all so much more exciting. I still can't get over how much cooler the maps are too.
If you're excited to see what Vortex and the Ray Gun in MWIII is like, I present to you my gameplay and commentary video below. Enjoy the show.
