God of War is slowly becoming one of my favorite games of all time

Experiencing God of War on PS5

You may have seen me mention God of War in my previous blog where I showed off a bunch of photos that I captured in the robust photo mode on my new PlayStation 5. It’s crazy to think I never played the previous God of War titles. Thankfully that has not caused me any troubles in enjoying the plot of God of War (technically the 4th in the series despite its title).

I have always enjoyed stories of Norse mythology and video games. I have not combined the two since 2008 way back during the Xbox 360 era when playing Viking: Battle For Asgard. That is a game I remember spending hours grinding just to unlock every achievement and obtain 1000 gamerscore. The game itself was decent, but I think it was getting to experience the Viking way of life that really had me tuned in.

Skip forward 10 years to 2018 and God of War releases. At the time I wasn’t in much of a gaming mood and seemed to forgo all of the amazing new games despite having a PS4. I had only achieved a couple of platinum trophies all-time (PlayStation’s equivalent to 1000 gamerscore) and had lost the urge to complete new releases. I was more focused on other things I suppose, plus had lived through many years of guilt for “wasting too much time gaming”.

Right near the end of the PS4 life cycle I again began to feel that itch to dive into beautifully created gaming experiences. There were so many great games I had missed out on and even more coming out every month. I often thought about trying out God of War, but never did purchase it. I was too busy with Ghost of Tsushima and then Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, both of which I got platinum trophies for. Then it was announced that God of War would be one of many games that would be included for free in the PS5’s PlayStation Plus Collection.

I had to resist the urge to spend money buying God of War. That became easier when I realized that it would be running at an extremely smooth and consistent 60 frames per second on PS5. On top of that, load times are no longer a thing. That combined with the already amazing environments and character models made it the obvious choice for the first game for me to aim to complete after experiencing Astro’s Playroom and learning what the DualSense is capable of.

Sure Assassin’s Creed Valhalla just came out when the PS5 became available, but I am so tired of the AC gameplay loop and honestly didn’t even think once about picking that one up. I actually wasn’t even wanting to play God of War for its Norse mythology, mostly just because it was praised as being one of the greatest PS4 titles. Now I’m finding the Norse theme of God of War to be one of my favorite parts about the game.

Everything I’ve played so far has made me so thrilled and happy to have spent the time to experience. Kratos and his son Atreus are on quite the journey together. I just got to the part where Kratos finally reveals to his son that they both are gods. It was a true revelation and I can only imagine where things will go from here.

Plus I unexpectedly just unlocked the Blades of Chaos from the previous God of War games. I was already enjoying the hell out of the Leviathan Axe and bare-handed brawls, but they threw in another weapon that I honestly was not even expecting since I hadn’t played the other games in the series.

I’ll be posting more about this game I’m sure, especially since I keep taking such cool screenshots thanks to photo mode. I’m also stacking up recordings for all of the trophies and have a goal to get the platinum trophy for this one. That’ll take awhile, but I’ll create a video with ShareFactory whenever it finally happens.

Maybe I like this game so much thanks to my DNA makeup, lots of Norse possibilities as you can see from my AncestryDNA percentages below. Along with that there are tons more photos from my recent time with God of War on PS5. Enjoy!
