Acabo de terminar el mes en una nota alta y quiero que la bola siga rondando asi que aqui vamos otra vez Hive! esta semana he estado un poco mas activo de lo usual jugando videojuegos, disfrutando Ocarina Of Time y probando diferentes emuladores en la Wii (entre ellos uno de Sega Genesis que muero por mostrarles) pero en el medio de todo esto me voy dando cuenta de que la practica de revivir los juegos retro es un tema complicado incluso para los grandes desarrolladores de la industria, por una parte todos los derechos de una obra en concreto incluyendo la venta y distribucion de, digamos Sonic 2, estan reservados tanto para el productor como el estudio desarrollador, algo justo que por muchos años se peleo en el videojuego y que nunca pongo en duda, pero que pasa cuando la tacnologia avanza, los viejos videojuegos se van quedando atras y empiezan a formar parte de una especie de museo del imaginario colectivo? Mas importante..
¿Que pasa si nadie juega a un videojuego?
El internet hoy en dia ha evolucionado de manera tal que se estan dando pasos gigantescos con el videojuego a cada rato, solo para pensar que hace solo 10 años las mecanicas y la forma en la que consumimos videojuegos se distancian radicalmente, ahora solo imagina la industria de hace 20.. 30 años, cuando el internet apenas era un juguete para unos pocos iluminados y los arcades dominaban a los jugadores, despues de todo el festival y el auge de las consolas, todos esos arcades van al olvido y tambien todos los juegos olvidados de las consolas con cartuchos, Nintendo tiene un monton de juegos que pasaron por el mercado sin pena ni gloria y que hoy en dia no representan ni siquiera un plan para implementarlos a las consolas modernas, pero suerte para nosotros personas apasionadas a los videojuegos, lejos de toda influencia de la industria y dispuesta a desarrollar estas pequeñas maravillas que dejan vivir nuevamente estos recuerdos del pasado.

Los Emuladores han sido desde el comienzo del videojuego una especie de maquina del tiempo, permitiendo revivir nuevamente todo tipo de experiencias de juegos anteriores de la mano de un programa que interpreta las instrucciones de ejecucion de cada consola y las traduce a un lenguaje que pueda entender y ejecutar un ordenador comun como el que tenemos en casa, desde el nacimiento de los primeros ROMs (archivos en donde se almacena toda la informacion e "instrucciones" de un juego) ha habido este debate algido sobre si es legal y etico realizar o apoyar este tipo de acciones, y les digo que legal para nada lo es segun las leyes de derechos de autor de la mayoria de los paises pero pasa algo muy interesante, contrario a otros medios como el arte o el cine, en donde esas obras se van perdiendo y las empresas propietarias de estos derechos de autor no hacen nada para poner a disposicion algunos juegos retro al publico,, nuevamente estan en su derecho pero es una cagada no poder coneguir de manera legal algun juego simplemente por el hecho de que, la consola ya no se fabrica, o la desarrolladora no ha hecho un port de ese juego para su consola actual.
Por este motivo Microsoft, que desde hace tiempo se esta ganando a los jugadores a base de sus decisiones habia anunciado hace poco que estaba haciendo todo lo posible en el marco legal para permitir este tipo de softwares, algo que me parecio curioso es que hace unos años baneo todos los emuladores de su tienda asi que un poco de hipocresia del lado del tio Phill, probablemente vieron el potencial que habia en los que buscan jugar juegos por nostalgia en las nuevas consolas porque este movimiento no se basa precisamente en la legalidad de los programas que todos conocemos para emular consolas y juegos sino que aboga para que las nuevas consolas puedan ejecutar este tipo de programas y jugar todo tipo de juegos de manera legible y legal (ya veo una demanda de Nintendo en el horizonte)

No se ustedes pero yo estoy empezando a confiar un poco mas en Microsoft estos dias, por una parte estan haciendo todo lo que pediamos que se hiciese desde hace decadas, darle un espacio a otro tipo de software para preservar videojuegos mas antiguos y es que tambien tienen una plataforma perfecta para alojarlos, el Xbox Game Pass ha demostrado ser el experimento mas loco de Xbox pero tambien ha abierto muchas puertas al mercado de los videojuegos, quiza sea ahora el turno de los juegos mas antiguos de la compañia para que den el salto a las consolas mas modernas, pero por supuesto primero hay una gran batalla legal con todo el tema de los derechos de los desarrolladores y muero por ver como Microsoft la enfrenta.
Una nota aparte podria ser, ¿que le espera al resto de consolas? porque Microsoft al parecer solo vela por integrar su catalogo y un par de juegos mas que le cedan sus derechos pero que pasa si quieres emular Sony? o Nintendo? Estuve investigando un poco el caso de Sony porque aunque la PS4 y la PS5 permiten retrocompatibilidad lo cierto es que se queda algo corto el catalogo de juegos que dispone en muchas de sus tiendas, quiza la nueva idea de Sony de hacer exactamente lo mismo que Microsoft (un Gamepass) alze un poco mas el interes por este tipo de juegos y jugador, pero hasta la fecha y por lo que he visto solo hay interes en seguir trayendo a paso de tortuga nuevos juegos retrocompatibles de las viejas consolas de Playstation.
Por el lado de Nintendo la cosa cambia, y no estoy seguro si para bien o para mal, es dueño de la mayoria de sus juegos debido a sus First Party y eso le otorga un catalogo enorme para ofrecer al consumidor, que y sabemos es de lo mas nostalgico que encontraremos en este sector, otra cosa es como lo vende, porque he visto que aunque han desarrollado una especie de canal para jugar a todos estos juegos desde la comodidad de una Switch, estan vendiendolo sumamente CARO, algo asi como MUY caro,, algunos de estos titulos retro se venden casi al mismo precio que un estreno asi que eso me da una razon mas para seguir emulando todo con una vieja Wii y un poco de paciencia.

Personalmente pienso que los emuladores abren paso a todo tipo de jugadores, mantienen viva esa chispa de los videojuegos y no los condenan solo a la memoria, la mayoria de estos programas no recoge ningun tipo de beneficio y puedo decir que siempre vas a encontrar emuladores gratis para la consola que quieras si tiene ya un par de años de lanzada, es normal que las desarrolladores esten tratando de sacarle provecho a todo esto tanto para los jugadores como para sus bolsillos, pero creo que este es un paso alternativo un poco mas claro para aquellos que quieran disfrutar los clasicos de antaño sin tener que pasar por todo el trabajo de descargar un emulador y configurarlo, todo sea para preservar el videojuego y de disfrutarlo de la mejor forma posible.

What if nobody plays a video game?
Nowadays the internet has evolved in such a way that giant steps are being taken with video games all the time, just to think that only 10 years ago the mechanics and the way we consume video games are radically distant, now just imagine the industry of 20. 30 years ago, when the internet was just a toy for a few enlightened and the arcades dominated the players, after all the festival and the rise of the consoles, all those arcades are going to oblivion and also all the forgotten games of the cartridge consoles, Nintendo has a lot of games that passed through the market without pain or glory and today do not even represent a plan to implement them to modern consoles, but luckily for us people passionate about video games, away from any influence of the industry and willing to develop these little wonders that let live again these memories of the past.

The Emulators have been since the beginning of the video game a kind of time machine, allowing to relive again all kinds of experiences of previous games by the hand of a program that interprets the instructions of execution of each console and translates them into a language that can understand and run a common computer like the one we have at home, since the birth of the first ROMs (files where all the information and "instructions " of a game is stored) there has been this algido debate about whether it is legal and ethical to perform or support this type of actions, and I tell you that it is not legal at all according to the copyright laws of most countries but something very interesting happens, contrary to other media such as art or film, where these works are being lost and the companies that own these copyrights do nothing to make available some retro games to the public, again they are in their right but it is a shitty thing to not be able to get a game in a legal way simply because the console is no longer manufactured, or the developer has not made a port of that game for your current console.
For this reason Microsoft, which for a long time has been winning over gamers based on its decisions, announced recently that it was doing everything possible in the legal framework to allow this type of software, something that I found curious is that a few years ago it banned all emulators from its store so a little hypocrisy from the side of the uncle Phill, probably they saw the potential in those looking to play games for nostalgia on the new consoles because this movement is not exactly based on the legality of the programs we all know to emulate consoles and games but advocates that the new consoles can run this kind of programs and play all kinds of games in a readable and legal way (I already see a Nintendo lawsuit on the horizon).

I don't know about you but I'm starting to trust Microsoft a little more these days, for one thing they are doing everything we've been asking for decades, giving a space to other software to preserve older video games and they also have a perfect platform to host them, Xbox Game Pass has proven to be Xbox's craziest experiment but it has also opened many doors to the video game market, maybe now it's the turn of the company's older games to make the jump to the latest consoles, but of course first there's a big legal battle with the whole developer rights issue and I'm dying to see how Microsoft faces it.
Just a side note could be, what's in store for the rest of the consoles, because Microsoft apparently only looks out for integrating their catalog and a couple of other games that they cede their rights to, but what if you want to emulate Sony? or Nintendo? I was doing some research on Sony's case because although the PS4 and PS5 allow backward compatibility the truth is that the catalog of games available in many of its stores is somewhat short, maybe the new idea of Sony to do exactly the same as Microsoft (a Gamepass) raise a little more interest in this type of games and player, but to date and from what I've seen there is only interest in continuing to bring new backward compatible games of the old Playstation consoles at a snail's pace.
On Nintendo's side the thing changes, and I'm not sure if for better or for worse, they own most of their games due to their First Party and that gives them a huge catalog to offer to the consumer, which and we know is the most nostalgic that we will find in this sector, another thing is how they sell it, although I have seen that they have developed a kind of channel to play all these games from the comfort of a Switch, they are selling it extremely EXPENSIVE, something like VERY expensive, some of these retro titles are sold almost at the same price as a premiere so that gives me one more reason to continue emulating everything with an old Wii and a little patience.

Personally I think that emulators open the way to all types of players, keep alive the spark of video games and do not condemn them only to memory, most of these programs do not collect any kind of profit and I can say that you will always find free emulators for the console you want if it has already a couple of years of released, it is normal that developers are trying to take advantage of all this for both gamers and their pockets, but I think this is an alternative step a little clearer for those who want to enjoy the classics of yesteryear without having to go through all the work of downloading an emulator and configure it, everything is to preserve the game and enjoy it in the best possible way.
