I continue showing you a little more of my visit to the city of Barquisimeto. In a previous post I showed you my visit to the Bararida Zoo. _{You can read this publication by following this link:

I didn't want to include it in the previous post because I wanted to dedicate a complete post to it, since it is a place that, in my opinion, I found fantastic. Join me, once again, on this tour in which I will show you, through photographs, my visit to the "Sebastian De Los Reyes" Serpentarium.

No quería incluirlo en la publicación anterior porque quería dedicarle un post completo, ya que es un lugar que, en mi opinión, me pareció fantástico. Acompañenme, otra vez, a este recorrido en el que les mostraré, a través de fotografías, mi visita al serpentario "Sebastian De Los Reyes".

This serpentarium, although small, has some really interesting things worth commenting on. Upon arrival, we came across a small sign with caricatured art of the place. This sign was in the outside area of the serpentarium, where there was an exhibit of some animals, or at least there should be alligators or small lizards, but there was nothing, just the water where they should be.

Este serpentario, aunque pequeño, tiene cosas realmente interesantes que vale la pena comentar. Al llegar, nos encontramos con un pequeño letrero con un arte caricaturesco del lugar. Este letrero se encontraba en el área exterior del serpentario, en donde había exhibición de algunos animales, o al menos debería haber caimanes o lagartos pequeños, pero no había nada, solo el agua en donde deberían estar.

The shape of the place is that of a huge snake. The entrance is precisely that, the mouth of the snake. It is quite an interesting design where some people take advantage of the opportunity to take pictures. I didn't take pictures at the snake's mouth, or the entrance of the serpentarium, but my companion did take a couple of pictures with his niece, who also accompanied us throughout the tour.

La forma del lugar es el de una enorme serpiente. La entrada es precisamente esa, la boca de la serpientes. Es un diseño bastante interesante en el que algunas personas aprovechan de tomarse fotos. Yo no me tomé fotos en la boca de la serpiente, o la entrada del serpentario, pero mi acompañante sí se tomó un par de fotos con su sobrina, que también nos acompañó durante todo el recorrido.

After paying our respective entrance fees, we entered the area of the different exhibits they had in the place. The first thing we were greeted with was a table where they had a lot of jars with different types of animals preserved in formaldehyde. I should clarify that at first I did not want to go to this Serpentarium, because I know that in this kind of places they have spiders in exhibits and sometimes they take them out of their habitat. I am arachnophobic and therefore I was quite afraid to go in, but in the end I dared.

Después de pagar nuestras respectivas entradas, ingresamos al área de las distintas exhibiciones que tenían en el lugar. Lo primero con lo que nos recibieron fue con una mesa en donde tenían un montón de frascos con distintos tipos de animales conservados en formol. Debo aclarar que en un primer momento no quería ir a este Serpentario, pues sé que en este tipo de lugares tienen arañas en exhibiciones y a veces las sacan de su hábitad. Yo soy aracnofóbico y por eso me sentía bastante miedo de entrar, pero al final me atreví.

Let me tell you a little bit about all the things that were on this table. The first thing that caught my attention was a small insectarium with numerous butterflies of different colors. Although it does not stand out among the other specimens on the table, I found them interesting, because of the way they were preserved and well cared for among that pair of glass sheets. On the other hand, there were also really strange lizards and animals that I had never seen before, such as a huge tarantula and large lizards. Although it was dead, the shape of the tarantula alone caused a certain rejection in me, so I didn't even dare to take the jar, as I was too scared of the animal, even if it was dead.

Permítanme detallarles un poco sobre todas las cosas que tenían en esta mesa. Lo primero que llamó mi atención, fue un pequeño insectario en donde estaban numerosas mariposas de variados y distintos colores. Aunque no destaca mucho entre los otros especímentes que hay en la mesa, a mi sí me resultaron interesantes, por la manera en que estaban conservadas y bien cuidadas entre aquel par de láminas de vidrio. Por otra parte, había también lagartijas y animales realmente extraños que nunca antes había visto, como una enorme tarántula y lagartijas de gran tamaño. Aunque estaba muerta, la sola forma de la tarántula causaba cierto rechazo en mi, así que no me atreví ni tan siquiera a tomar el frasco, me daba demasiado miedo el animal, incluso estando muerto.

All these species of insects and lizards that they had in jars were in a very good state of preservation; however, the guide told us that the colors we saw were not the original colors of the animal, since these usually lose their color due to the time they have been stored in formaldehyde. On the other hand, they also had a few skins, both of mammals and reptiles. It caught my attention that they had a skin similar to those of a crocodile and a rather long one that belonged to a giant snake, I do not remember if he mentioned the type of snake, but the skin was long. What did stand out to the eye and what I did manage to take a good picture of, because I had good lighting, was a couple of stuffed animals, one was a kind of rodent and the other a cachicamo or armadillo. I had never seen these animals before, so it was interesting to see them even in this state.

Todas estas espécies de insectos y lagartijas que tenían en frascos estaban en un muy buen estado de conservación; sin embargo, el guía nos comentó que los colores que veíamos no eran los colores originales del animal, ya que estos suelen perder su color por el tiempo que llevan guardados en formol. Por otra parte, también tenían unas cuántas pieles, tanto de mamíferos como de reptiles. Me llamó mucho la atención que tenían una piel similares a las de cocodrilo y una bastante larga que era de una serpiente gigante, no recuerdo si mencionó el tipo de serpiente, pero era larga la piel. Lo que sí destacaba a la vista y a lo que sí logré tomarle una buena foto, porque tenía buena iluminación, fue a un par de animales disecados, uno era una suerte de roedor y otro un cachicamo o armadillo. Nunca había visto estos animales, así que fue interesante verlos aunque fuese en este estado.

In addition to everything I mentioned, they also had a few skulls of small rodents that also inhabit the green areas of the zoo. I don't remember what the guide called them, but I know we saw some in some green areas, they were not small at all, they looked like rabbits but they were neither rabbits nor rats, they were another type of rodent.

Además de todo lo que les mencioné, también tenían unos cuantos cráneos de pequeños roedores que también habitan en las áreas verdes del zoológico. No recuerdo cómo los llamaba el guía, pero sé que vimos unos en algunas áreas verdes, no eran nada pequeños, parecían conejos pero no eran ni conejos ni ratas, eran otro tipo de roedor.

As far as insects are concerned, there were 3 that caught my attention: A giant centipede, one of those that one normally sees on TV, with the difference that this one was real. It is impressive the size it has in live, considering that it is inside the jar, dead. Another insect that stood out was a huge beetle that I don't remember if it was a rhinoceros or a goliath beetle, the point is that it was gigantic and, according to the guide, it only exists in Africa. They also had a lobster in formaldehyde, just like the beetle, but this one did not look quite clear for the photo, so I could not capture it well.

En lo que respecta a insectos, habían 3 que llamaron mucho mi atención: Un cienpies gigante, de esos que uno ve normalmente en la tv, con la diferencia que este sí era real. Es impresionante el tamaño que tiene en vivo, considerando que este estana dentro del frasco, muerto. Otro insecto que resaltaba era un enorme escarabajo que no recuerdo si era rinoceronte o escarabajo goliat, el punto es que era gigantesco y, según el guía, solo existe en áfrica. También tenían una langosta en formol, tal como el escarabajo, pero esta no se veía del todo clara para la foto, así que no pude capturarla bien.

Time for the snakes. On the side of the table, they had a bunch of snakes kept in formaldehyde. I was quite fascinated by these, because you don't normally see these types of snakes. Although I have seen some blind snakes, which look like worms, the others I had never seen in my life. It should be noted that the colors of the snakes kept in jars are not the real color of the snakes, due to the discoloration caused by formaldehyde. There was a coral and a false coral, he explained the difference between one and the other, the difference being the amount of black rings that this one has. Of course, the conclusion we all came to is that we are not going to stop to examine if it has the amount of black rings once we see this snake, so it is best to keep our distance and let a professional evaluate if it is poisonous or not.

Hora de las serpientes. Aun lado de la mesa, tenían un montón de serpientes guardadas en formol. Me sentí bastante fascinado por estas, porque normalmente no se ven este tipo de serpientes. Aunque sí he visto algunas serpientes ciegas, que parecen gusanos, las otras nunca en la vida las había visto. Cabe destacar, que los colores que se aprecian de las serpientes guardadas en frasco, no es el color real de las mismas, por el tema del decolorado que causa el formol. Había una coral y una falsa coral, nos explicó la diferencia que hay entre una y otra, siendo la diferencia la cantidad de anillos de color negro que esta tiene. Claro, la conclución a la que todos llegamos es que no nos vamos a detener a examinar si tiene la cantidad de anillos negros una vez vemos a esta serpiente, así que lo mejor es mantener la distancia y dejar que sea un profesional que evalue si es venenosa o no.

In any case, it was very interesting and educational to see all these species of snakes, even in these jars... Well, leaving these exhibits aside, we moved on to the snakes' habitats. At this point, I should clarify that I felt a bit calmer because the guide said that they did not have tarantulas in the habitats, but in quarantine. They keep them there for a while and then they take them out to exhibit them. It was lucky for me that when I went there, the tarantulas were not on exhibit, or I would have had a hard time. On the other hand, I quite enjoyed all these beautiful snakes that were there. I have always considered them to be animals to be deeply respected, because they are dangerous and at the same time calm, at least some species.

En cualquier caso, fue muy interesante y educativo ver a todas estas especies de serpiente, aunque fuese en estos frascos... Bien, dejando de lado estas exhibiciones, pasamos a las hábitad de las serpientes. En este punto debo aclarar que me sentí un poco más tranquilo porque el guía dijo que no tenían tarántulas en las hábitad, sino en cuarentena. Las mantienen allí por un tiempo y luego las sacan a exhibir, una suerte para mi que cuando fui no estaban las tarantulas en exhibición, la habría pasado mal. Por otra parte, disfruté bastante de todas estas hermosas serpientes que estaban allí. Siempre he considerado que son animales a los que hay que tenerles profundo respeto, porque son peligrosos y al mismo tiempo tranquilos, al menos algunas especies.

According to the same guide, when we arrived at the rattlesnake's habitat, it adds a rattle to its tail every time it molts. He also explained that it uses this characteristic sound to warn of its presence. Normally snakes have the worst luck when confronted with a human or a larger animal than them, because even though they are venomous, they almost always end up dying in the confilct. So these snakes use that rattling sound to warn both animals and humans of their presence. If we move away from the snake, it will also move away. He told us that snakes are not those animals they show in the movies. They attack, yes, but only if they get too close. If we leave them alone, they will leave us alone. Even so, he clarified that accidents always happen with these animals, for example when we put our hand in a hole where they are, or when we step on them while walking on a path with undergrowth.

Según el mismo guía, cuando llegamos al hábitad de la serpiente de cascabel, esta agrega un cascabel a su cola cada vez que muda de piel. También nos explicó que usa este sonido característico para avisar de su presencia. Normalmente las serpientes tienen las de perder cuando se enfrentan a un humano o un animal más grande que ellas, porque a pesar de que son venenosas, casi siempre terminan muriendo en el confilcto. Así que estas serpientes usan ese sonido de cascabel para avisar de su presencia tanto a animales como humanos. Si nos alejamos de la serpiente, esta también se alejará. Nos dijo que las serpientes no son esos animales que muestran en las películas. Atacan, sí, pero solo si se acercan demasiado. Si las dejamos tranquilas, ellas nos dejarán en paz. Aún así, nos aclaró que siempre ocurren accidentes con estos animales, como por ejemplo cuando metemos la mano en algun algún agujero donde estan, o cuando las pisan mientras caminan por algún sendero con maleza.

I felt that in a way, like many wild animals, snakes are also misunderstood animals, but I repeat, to which we must have a lot of respect.

Sentí que en cierta forma, como muchos animales salvajes, las serpientes también son animales incomprendidos, pero repito, a los que hay que tenerles mucho respeto.

To end my tour of this serpentarium, where I had the opportunity to see really beautiful animals, I say goodbye with a photograph I took from one of the windows above. It gives the impression of being on top of the snake's back that is on the façade of the serpentarium. A photograph that, in my opinion, looked great.

Ya para finalizar mi recorrido por este serpentario, en donde tuve la oportunidad de ver animales realmente hermosos, me despido con una fotografía que tomé desde una de las ventanas de arriba. Da la impresión de estar encima del lomo de la serpiente que está en la fachada del serpentario. Una fotografía que, en mi opinión, quedó genial.
