Greetings, Hive!
I’m currently finishing an English as a second language course, and as a final assignment we must make a short presentation on a topic that has been assigned to us. Coincidentally, the topic assigned to me was violence in video games, I've been a gamer practically since I can remember so I'm excited to talk about it, besides it's a field in which I feel comfortable. As I said, this presentation is really short (4 minutes maximum) so I would like to take advantage of the research work I did and expand it a little more with this post.
So without any further ado, let's start!
Everyone, absolutely everyone, has heard at least once phrases like: "if you keep playing that game you will go crazy", or "these video games are making children violent", or even worse: "those shooting games are electronic military indoctrination", claiming that video games have a strong negative impact on people's behaviors.
If we look at this in retrospective, video games have always been a focus of attention (in a not necessarily good way) for conservative people or people from generations prior to ours, because, from their point of view, everything that is for entertainment purposes is frowned upon; television, internet, series, and what concerns us today, video games. These people have strongly ingrained (and seen as correct) ideas such as over-sacrifice and labor exploitation, so for them anything that isn’t working like a slave for more than 8 hours in a job that doesn’t offer you more than a minimum wage is not well seen, but anyway, that's another whole story.
The thing is that this percentage of population is the main source of criticism to the gaming industry, and while they never fully agreed with the video game industry since the beginning, there was nothing that would have made them lose their minds... Until 1993.
With the release of Mortal Kombat and Doom the world (and especially conservatives) lost their minds.
How was it possible the existence of a fighting video game where the loser of the fight was cruelly dismembered? How was it possible for a video game to put you in the shoes of an ex-Marine who murder demons in hell itself? What impact is this going to have on society? Kids are going to become serial killers! These games are mass murder simulators!
These are just some of the things that were heard at the time, this led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board, a system that classifies video games and suggests who should consume them according to their content. However, this wasn’t enough to calm the voices of those who were convinced that video games were the source of evil in society, so there have been all kinds of attempts to restrict everything from their creation to their commercialization and consumption. Throughout their history, video games have faced countless accusations from those who, from their ignorance, accuse them of making people violent, and this in turn is clearly exploited by a political agenda that seeks to distract society from the real problem, it has been seen in virtually any medium, cinema, television, comics, video games; anyone is to blame but the real society problems.
This debate was the impetus for a large number of studies by universities and professionals, which, to the surprise of conservatives, showed that there is no direct relationship between video games and the behavior of violent individuals. It was more than demonstrated that it’s absurd to blame video games for the behavior of a serial killer, it’s just as logical as thinking that someone will become a high performance athlete by watching the Olympics or someone to become an expert in medicine by watching Doctor House. However, every time there is an opportunity to speak out on this issue, it’s done; the United States is one of the countries whose politicians most condemn video games consumption and constantly associate it with tragedies due to shootings that occur with relative "frequency" in schools or universities. However, this graphic speaks by itself...
Fortunately, these studies not only showed that video games don’t cause violent behavior but, by the contrary, have a positive overall impact on those who enjoy them. They were found to improve cognitive responses, attention span, decision making, and may even function as part of anti-depressant treatments since playing video games generates neurotransmitters responsible for releasing serotonin in our brain. As long as they are enjoyed in moderation, video games will have a positive impact on our lives.
Blaming video games for causing violent behavior is something that has been left in the past thanks to the massive access to information that we have today; this has been gradually opening the minds of those who at first remained skeptical about this issue. However, there will always be those who look for the easy way out instead of looking at the uncomfortable places and asking the right questions, it is easier to blame someone else than to recognize your own faults, no one but parents are responsible for instilling the right values in their children and teach them to distinguish between reality and fiction. Video games have never been and never will be the cause of evil in the world.

¡Saludos, Hive!
And that's all for today, I would love to read your stories about gaming and any anecdotes related to violent video games because, I'm sure we all have some. What about you? What do you think about this? Do you think video games can make people violent?
