I recently joined a Discord server where they organize monthly game challenges, and this time it just happened to be from a franchise that I hadn't played for a long time but I loved it years ago. In fact, I'm surprised to realize that I never talked about this game before, although it makes sense if by the time I played them I had not yet entered this platform.
That's right, I'm talking about Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing- nah I'm joking, it's just Tony Hawk.
The challenge is to get the highest score on the game's "Pro Skater" map in High Score mode, which gives you 2 minutes to do your tricks and combos before the time runs out, though it only ends if you're no longer in any combo by the time it reaches 0.
Among the real skaters the game has, along with the ability to put your face in the game with a custom skater, unlockables like Shrek and a soldier from Call of Duty were also available.
And since getting funny with Shrek on a skateboard would be too easy a joke, I decided to go for the soldier and make the mission get the most fantastic tricks.
I went through multiple attempts to get to this score which I currently have as my personal record and amount I will have for the challenge unless I get something better in less than 4 days, but at least it was a good attempt at least for now that I'm a bit "rusty" with my accuracy. At least I was able to try it with Gran Turismo 4 music playing in the background 😅.
Between tricks in the air and jumps you can hit between rails, keeping your balance both on these rails and when executing manuals to keep your combo on the ground is going to be extremely important as a bad fall, losing your balance on a rail, or even just hitting a jump and not having your feet facing forward when you land will cause you to collapse on the ground, immediately losing the entire combo points for not finishing it right.
In most cases, if this happens to you, you can hit the button to do a "FREAK OUT" and get even with the skateboard. It will only reward you with from 1000 to 3000 points, but this little gesture that takes some time off will also stand as a "trick" if you start a combo after that.
YEET
The rails in the upper area can be quite useful to extend your combo and get you some bonus tricks by how you maneuver up there, but the higher you go, the higher your fall is going to be...and while you may have the stamina of a cat to land well, the thing is that where you jump from you don't end up mistakenly landing on a rail and getting off balance, or miss a rail that is lower down to continue your combo.
It can be risky, as it is incredibly tempting to try to stay in a combo for a long time, but it's all in the margin of error and how much you want to keep betting between more tricks with the cost of losing those valuable points for a bad fall, or if you decide to end it earlier to at least secure the points and try to start a new combo.
The creativity in which you can get to some places, mainly knowing where to jump on rails and connect the manuals to move across the floor to a new area, and how you can spice up your tricks is what gives you that incentive to go for more in these games, and the reward for taking the risk if you are a master of stability is huge as with each new trick you do in a combo, is one more to the multiplier, so doing 16 tricks in a combo will give you 16 times the points you get from that combo.
I haven't played any of this game outside of this particular level, but at the very least the gameplay follows how I remember it from Underground 1 and Pro Skater 4, so the rest of the levels should at least give you a variety of parks to be able to get cool with your skateboard, and maybe break your knees in the attempt by overconfident.
Uhhh...hey, look, an alien!
And here's another one!
But seriously, I think it would take a deeper look into the maps and player content of this game to comment beyond the tricks and combos I tried to do here, hitting that 250k point score and failing to break that record multiple attempts later that day.
Although if you think that sitting down and retrying this multiple times sounds tedious just for a challenge, well maybe...but it's nothing compared to what I tried again recently...
