Buffalo Silver and Happy New Year's Eve! / Re-blog lottery!

Wow! Here we are again!

New Year's Eve... If time keeps flying at this rate I'll be dead before I know it... I hope you all have a fun and safe night tonight! I already shared my millennium coin so today I thought I would share a silver round with an iconic design. This is a nice silver round produced by Elemental Mint based on the historic buffalo nickel produced in the US from 1913-1938. It's so memorable that the US mint produces as 24 karat gold one Troy ounce coin today.

About the round:
Composition: 99.9% silver
Weight: one Troy ounce
Mint: Elemental Mint
Diameter: 39 mm
Thickness: 3.1 mm

The obverse of the coin depicts a composite profile of three Native American chiefs, Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota and Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and Big Tree of the Kiowa. The reverse is a bison (buffalo). The coin replaced the Liberty nickel and has been a highly popular coin for collectors ever since. This beautiful silver round pays respect to the coin that remains popular in the US to this day. Best of all it's one ounce of pure silver!

Many people don't realize that this was based on real Native American chiefs. James Earle Fraser designed on the profiles of three Native American leaders . So I decided to do a quick recap of these men and the struggles they endured against the US invading and eventually taking their lands.
Iron Tail in 1905, from Wikipedia
Iron Tail was one of the most famous Native Americans as he performed in Buffalo Bill's Wild West. This led to national and international fame. As a result he was used as part of the profile used in the Buffalo Nickel.
hippostcard.com Chief Two Moons
Chief Two Moons was one of the chiefs involved in the battle of Little Big Horn. There of course General Custer and his men were defeated by a union of Native American tribes. When he finally was forced to surrender he became a scout for the union army. He was noted to be extremely friendly and on multiple occasions travelled to Washington DC to petition better conditions for his people.

Chief Big Tree of the Kiowa
Big Tree was a Kiowa chief who led raids for supplies for his people on white settlers near their reservation and eventually against Fort Still. He was captured and sentenced to death. However two years later he was released as the union faced a potential new war with the Native Americans.

The profile of these three very brave warriors were blended into the profile of the Buffalo nickel and this silver round. The Native Americans were very unfairly treated by the US government taking away their lands and eventually forcing them onto reservations. In my opinion injustices continue to this day. It was very fitting to honor these three chiefs in this beautiful silver round.

I hope you enjoyed my post today. Have a safe and happy New Year's Eve. Thanks for stopping by and I really appreciate your support! If you have any suggestions, questions, or concerns please feel free to leave them below.

Happy New Years!
