Several years ago, my husband told me that his friend asked him if he was interested in working at the café his friend was planning to open and he mentioned that I might be interested.
I currently work three to four days a week, so I could work a bit more... Ideally, I'd like to find a way to work from home, but that's not going too well.
I had forgotten about it because it was a long time ago, but a few weeks ago, I was asked if I was still interested. Our youngest daughter was just saying that she wanted a part-time job so I replied to him that I could work only on the weekends and our 14-year-old was interested as well.
I didn't hear back from him right away, so I thought it wouldn't work. Then suddenly, I got a message asking if I could come in the next day.
I head out to the cafe with my daughter, thinking it was an interview and maybe training, but it turned out to be actual work right away 🤣
It's been a long time since I worked at a café. It’s been since I came to Canada on a working holiday visa. It feels strange to be working with my daughter as well.
When asked who would handle the register, I said that my daughter should. I couldn’t read the screen without my reading glasses 😭
I helped with taking out drinks and sandwiches from the fridge and cleaned tables and the kitchen area. I think I can make drinks but it might take a little time to freshen up my memory. I didn't have time to practice.
I hope my daughter will gradually learn the skills of a barista as well. I think it’ll be a good skill to have. She can work as a barista anywhere. I found out that a basic barista course costs around $300. However, my daughter said she’d rather learn from YouTube instead because it's cheaper and spending money on barista courses doesn't change her wages. Well, she's got a good point 😅unless you are looking for a job at the cafe right now. The skill and the certificate will get you the job easier.
The café is inside a museum. The customers are mostly museum staff and tourists. French, Spanish, Chinese, and English with British accent…It was fun hearing different languages. I was surprised when someone suddenly spoke to me in Japanese. It caught me off guard!
After working two days over the weekend, it's been fun watching my daughter receiving the tips with joy and calculating her wages. My pocket money will increase too, and I hope it will be a good experience for both of us ☺️
I'm grateful to my husband for the connections that provided our daughter with a great job experience and also helped me in my current job.

数年前、主人に、友達からカフェをオープンするんだけど手伝う？と聞かれたからワイフが興味あるかもと言っておいた…という話を聞かされていました。

カフェで働くなんて、カナダにワーホリで来ていた時以来です。しかも娘と一緒だなんて不思議な気分です。
どっちがレジする？と聞かれたので、それは次女ちゃんに任せました。老眼鏡なしでは画面の文字が見えなくて😭画面のフォントサイズとメニュー表示の簡易化をお願いしたいです。細か過ぎてややこしい…
私は冷蔵庫から飲み物やサンドイッチを出したり、テーブルや水回りの片付けをしました。ドリンクを作るのは私も出来ると思うのですが、勘を取り戻すのに少し時間がかかるかな…練習する時間はありませんでした。
次女ちゃんも徐々に出来るようになれば良いなと思います。バリスタの経験があったら他でもバイト出来ると思うので。
調べたら３００ドルくらいでバリスタの基本講習を受けられる様です。ケチな次女ちゃんはYoutubeで学ぶと言ってます。お金をかけて講習を受けても時給が上がるわけじゃないでしょ？と妙に説得力がありました😂（これからカフェでのバイトを探すならバリスタの講習は受けておいた方が有利だと思います）
カフェは博物館の中にあって、一般の人も入れますが、お客さんは博物館のスタッフと観光客がほとんどの様です。フランス語、スペイン語、中国語、ブリティッシュなまりの英語…色んな声が聞こえてきて楽しかったです。突然日本語で話しかけられて驚いたりもしました。
さてさて、週末2日働いたところで、チップをもらったり、時給と勤務時間を計算してホクホクの次女ちゃんを見ているのが楽しいです、笑
私のお小遣いも増えるし、良い経験になるといいな☺️
そして、今の仕事もそうなのですが、主人を通してのコネクションに感謝です。
