We have ancient cities, most of which are in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, and have left remnants that shed light on our history all over Turkey. We also read the sad and interesting success stories of these cities, which are home to different civilizations. Some are also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Among those ancient cities, the one that caught my attention the most was the ancient city of Xanthos.
Xanthos Ancient City, which has a very old history, is on the road to Fethiye district of Antalya and is located in Kınık district of Kaş district. You can reach this ancient city, which you can easily reach via Antalya-Fethiye road with your own vehicles, at the end of a four-hour journey from Antalya. I can say that the asphalt is a beautiful entry road that can be considered narrow, with different kinds of flowers that take their place among the lush grass.
Shown as one of the most important cities of the Lycian civilization, the Ancient City opens its doors to its guests at 08.30 and closes at 20:00. They set the entrance fee to the city as 50 TL. Discounts are available for those with a museum card. There is a museum shop next to the ticket office. Next to the store, there is also a small cafe where you can have cold and hot drinks when you complete your tour.
The lush green grass growing inside the Ancient City, which was built on two hills, is officially wrapped in time-defying building stones. There are erected monuments, a theater stage and tombstones in the city, which spreads over a wide area. Even the scent of the flowers, which display a colorful image among the building blocks, adds a different beauty to my trip.
When we look at the history of Xanthos Ancient City, we encounter a sad story. Xanthos had a nation that fought heroically. As a society in which women have a voice, they were attacked by the Persians. Realizing that they could no longer win at the end of the long war, the Xanthos people refused to surrender and committed suicide by killing women and children, burning the city, and throwing themselves into these flames. As in all Ancient Cities, there is an ancient theater on the left side when you enter the city. The theater with 15 stair stones looks quite spacious. The back of the last stairs of the theater consists of high stones. Although this is one of the oldest ancient cities, the stones of the theater seem to have survived to the present day. When you go right behind the theater, you come across the palace ruins of the Lycian civilization.
There are two rectangular mausoleums rising next to the Ancient Theatre. There is an information board next to the mausoleum. It is written on this panel that the monumental tomb located in the southwest of the West Agora consists of a large rectangular pillar sitting on a pedestal and a burial chamber on top of it. The name of the tomb is also known as the Harpy Monument. There are some reliefs above the burial chamber of the monument. In the relief on the north side of the monument, an old person sitting in his seat and a young person wearing a helmet in preparation for wars were tried to be defined. On the relief on the south side of the monument, it was tried to show mixed creatures with bird bodies, women's heads, and wings, which they call Harpy, whose spirits they carry to the other world.
Near the entrance of the Ancient City, there is another tombstone, which, although slightly damaged, looks very magnificent by placing three flat stones on top of each other. Part of the tombstone was carved, and small relief stones were used on the other sides.
While visiting the whole area of the city, you come across some artifacts that reflect that day among the green grass. Both the writings and shapes of the works placed in the side entrance of the theater stage impressed me a lot.
The difference of Xanthos Ancient City from other ancient cities is that the area it covers is adorned with lush herbs and flowers. I would like you to see the beauty of the herbs growing between the theater stairs and the flowers trying to cover it by hugging the historical ruins.

Farklı medeniyetlere ev sahipliği yapan bu şehirlerimizin, kendine has hem acıklı hem de ilginç başarı öykülerini de okuyoruz. Bazıları da UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi'nde yer alıyor. İşte o antik kentlerden benim en çok dikkatimi çeken de Xanthos Antik şehri olmuştur.
Çok eski bir tarihi sahip olan, Xanthos Antik Kenti, Antalya'nın Fethiye ilçesi yolu üzerinde olup, Kaş ilçesinin Kınık mahallesinde bulunur. Kendi araçlarınızla Antalya Fethiye yolu üzerinden çok rahatlıkla gelebileceğiniz bu Antik Kente Antalya'dan yaklaşık dört saatlik yolculuk sonunda ulaşabilirsiniz. Yemyeşil otların arasında kendine yer edinen farklı türdeki çiçeklerin bulunduğu asfalt dar sayılabilecek güzel bir giriş yolu olduğunu söyleyebilirim.
Likya uygarlığının en önemli şehirleri arasında gösterilen Antik Kent, kapılarını misafirlerine saat 08.30'da açıp 20.00'de kapatıyor. Kente giriş ücretini 50 TL olarak belirlemişler. Müze kartı olanlar için indirim yapılıyor. Bilet satılan gişenin yanında bir müze mağazası yer alıyor. Mağazanın yanında da, gezinizi tamamladığınızda soğuk ve sıcak içecekler içebileceğiniz küçük tarz da kafe de bulunuyor.
İki tepe üzerine kurulan olan Antik Kentin, içinde yetişmiş ve gür bir şekilde görünen yemyeşil otlar, zamana meydan okuyan yapı taşlara resmen sarılmışlar. Geniş bir alana yayılan kentte dikme anıtı, tiyatro sahnesi ve mezar taşları yer alıyor. Yapı taşlarının arasından rengarenk bir görüntü sergileyen çiçeklerin kokusu bile, gezime ayrı bir güzellik katıyor.
Xanthos Antik Kentin biraz geçmişine baktığımızda hüzünlü bir hikayesiyle karşılaşıyoruz. Xanthos kahramanca savaşan bir millete sahipmiş. Özellikle kadınların söz sahibi olduğu bir toplum olarak, Perslerin saldırısına uğramışlar. Uzun süren savaşın sonunda artık kazanamayacaklarını anlayan Xanthoslular, teslim olmayı kabul etmeyerek, kadınları, çocukları öldürüp, şehri yakarak, kendilerini de bu alevlerin içine atarak intihar etmişler. Tüm Antik Kentlerde olduğu gibi, burada da kentte girdiğiniz de sol bölümde antik bir tiyatro bulunuyor. 15 merdiven taşı bulunan tiyatro oldukça geniş görünüyor. Tiyatronun son merdivenlerin arkasını da yüksek taşlardan oluşuyor. Burası en eski antik kentlerden biri olmasına rağmen tiyatronun taşları günümüze kadar sağlam bir şekilde gelmeyi başarmış görünüyor. Tiyatronun hemen arkasına geçtiğinizde Likya uygarlığının saray kalıntılarına rastlıyorsunuz.
Antik Tiyatronun yanında yükselen dikdörtgen şeklinde iki adet anıt mezar bulunuyor. Anıt mezarın yanında bir bilgilendir panosu yer alıyor. Bu panoda, Batı Agora'nın güneybatısında yer alan anıtsal mezarın bir kaide üzerinde oturan büyük dikdörtgen dikme ve bunun üzerine mezar odasından oluştuğu yazmaktadır. Mezarın adı da Harpyler Anıtı olarak geçmektedir. Anıtın mezar odasının üstünde bazı kabartmalarda yer alıyor. Anıtın kuzey tarafındaki kabartmasında koltuğunda oturan yaşlı bir kimseden, genç birinin savaşlara hazırlık için başı takılan kask alışı tanımlanmaya çalışılmış. Anıtın güney tarafındaki kabartmasında ise, Harpy olarak adlandırdıkları ruhları öbür dünyaya taşıdıkları kuş vücutlu, kadın başlı, kanatlı karışık yaratıklar gösterilmeye çalışılmış.
Antik Kentin giriş bölümüne yakın, üç düz taşın üst üste konularak üzerine biraz hasar görmüş olsa da gayet ihtişamlı görünen bir mezar taşı daha var. Mezar taşın bir bölümü oyulmuş, diğer yanlarında küçük küçük kabartma taşları kullanılmış.
Kentin tüm alanını gezerken, yemyeşil otların arasında o günü yansıtan bazı eserlere de rastlıyorsunuz. Özellikle tiyatro sahnesinin yandan giriş kısmına yerleştirilen eserlerin hem yazıları hem de şekilleri beni çok etkilemişti.
Xanthos Antik Kentin, diğer antik kentlerden farkı, kapladığı alanın yemyeşil otlar ve çiçeklerle süslenmiş olmasıdır. Tiyatro merdivenlerin arasından yeşeren otlar ve tarihi kalıntılara sarılarak üstünü örtmeye çalışan çiçeklerin etrafa verdiği güzelliği görmenizi isterdim.
