Stories about mermaids are found all across the world, influencing many different civilizations and worldviews. Anybody who asks what comes to mind when they think of this marine mythical creature will almost certainly mention the Disney film The Little Mermaid. You might even hear the first few bars of the song "Under the Sea" in your thoughts. Even while The Little Mermaid is arguably the most well-known mermaid tale worldwide, it wasn't the original.
All other stories about mermaids were supposedly inspired by the narrative of the Assyrian goddess Atargatis, who is thought to have been the primary source of the tale. The lunar, fertile, and aquatic goddess was known as Atargatis.
Images of mermaids initially surfaced in the eighth and tenth century B.C. In the Stone Age, these pictures were painted on cave walls. Around this time, people started to venture beyond the coast and explore the vast ocean instead of staying safe on land. The tales and legends around mermaids sprang from these adventures.

In Ancient Roman times, Atargatis was a beautiful and powerful priestess who fell in love with a human shepherd boy. He, simply being mortal, did not survive her divine lovemaking and died. She became pregnant with his baby and soon became distraught and remorseful. After the birth of a baby girl Semiranis on the shore, she threw herself into the ocean to drown. Her beauty was so great that the Gods did not let her die, but changed her into a Mermaid. Not only did she become a mermaid, but a goddess of the seas. Half woman and half fish. Atargatis was depicted as having long, flowing hair like the water.
She was the first mermaid.
