The Decentralised Internet?

A project which grabbed my attention several years ago was SIA, a blockchain based decentralised storage platform.

https://sia.tech/

It interested me because it uses blockchain based incentives and technology to fill a need, a rather complex need that private companies have been monopolising and controlling in recent years.

How is this project doing?

  • Fairly good Geographical distribution
  • There seems to be quite a few hosts

  • Usage and Storage Capacity is increasing quite rapidly

  • Crucially Storage Costs are just $3 per TB which compares to about $23 for Amazon S3 storage.

How easy is it to use?

Well it has a fairly standard Crypto Wallet and Software that needs private keys and seeds etc and takes forever to synch with the blockchain but it also has a more user friendly app ecosystem that seems really easy to use with 234 apps listed.

I still havent quite figured it out but the apps seem easy to use and there is even one that lets you created a decentralised distributed blog in a few clicks.

Have you tried Sia? What are your thoughts?

I am going to be trying it out over the coming weeks and if I find some interesting stuff I will write about it.
