Hello everyone!, Crimson Fox greets you again and I give you my warmest welcome to a new post, this time to share with you a somewhat extensive essay that we were asked to do in class, the topic seemed quite interesting so I wanted to give my opinion openly and to know other points of view regarding the subject. So without further ado, let's get started.

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema” Martin Scorsese on being asked about Marvel movies (IndieWire October 4 - 2019).

“"No las he visto. Lo he intentado, ¿sabes?

In the world of cinema, there are many different visions about what art represents in general, some may see it as a way of life, a form of expression or inspiration for the corresponding generation and those to come, while others may see it as a gold mine as exploitable as the audience will allow. Although it would be easier, simpler, and more comfortable to make this kind of division, not everything is black and white, every mind is a world, with thought and intentions behind every action, and where there is an investor who just wants to see how much success his investment can generate, there may be a person who is passionate about what he does and wants to use his talent and knowledge to make a great job and get that message across that he wants to get across to many people just for the love of art.

Some time ago some statements went viral and caused quite a debate about what "cinema" is, because two different visions of giants in the industry clashed, on the one hand making movies with the main purpose of selling as is the Marvel franchise, and on the other hand making movies that play with the unexpected, telling complex stories that demonstrate human nature and what it is capable of in different situations, with the risk of failure by going against popular trends, but with pride in capturing what one wants regardless of what the industry wants, this being the case of Martin Scorsese, the director more than known, and the one who gave these words in an interview, which ended up being very strong for some, and perhaps did not expect the stir they had in the end by the various interpretations of the same. This clash between visions leaves questions such as "Why did Scorsese say that?" or "Is he right?", questions that will try to be answered below.

Martin Scorsese is a very known film director and recognized for the high quality of his works, although at the beginning he was not as acclaimed as he is now, because as mentioned above, not following certain trends or choosing to do what viewers want to see can play against him, as it was in the case of Scorsese, as he could well deal with issues that could draw attention at the time, it is the tone and how he makes these films that gives them life and in turn makes them take a different direction than what is popularly wanted to see, not being until many years after he began his career that he began to gain more prestige among the big names in the industry, positioning him to where he is today.

So, did he say that Marvel's films are not cinema, out of jealousy? On the one hand, it would be understandable, to make so many quality films while staying true to his conception of art and cinema, for a franchise that puts out films he considers of lesser artistic value to earn a hell of a lot more with each film they put out by appealing for the mainstream should be something that would bruise even a little bit the ego of any filmmaker, just as any other artist or content creator should struggle if they want to get away from convention putting triple the effort than someone who only talks about their life, but this should not be the case. The purpose of Scorsese's films has already been made clear on more than one occasion, to tell stories that are a revelation to the viewer, without the intention of going for what would be more striking or generate more acceptance by people, hence the fact that he has touched on sensitive issues or has generated a lot of controversy in his films; Quite the opposite of companies or franchises that seek to please the viewer to ensure and maximize sales in terms of what is most sought after and requested in their respective context, spending millions of dollars on a production to then collect three times or more thanks to meet the demands of viewers. So with this, it could be said that since there is such a difference in the purpose of their films, to envy this kind of achievement would be a bit ill-advised.

So much was the mess that Scorsese himself had to clarify his intentions to make clear several of the elements mentioned above, in sum, he extended his thoughts about what he considered the cinematographic art and his vision of the transformation of the industry in recent years, arguments that are quite accurate, differently from his initial words that seemed more like a subjective opinion with hints of elitist criticism.

with this, the reason for his words is already better revealed, it is only his opinion, how many films are currently made is not to his liking as they lack everything he loves and defends of his conception of cinema. Whether he is right or wrong initially is not something that can be answered lightly, as said at the beginning, not everything is black and white, life is a scale of grays in which something like this rather than saying it is right or wrong one can agree or disagree, because each person perceives art differently, even James Gunn himself, director of great films like Guardians of the Galaxy, also from Marvel, admitted that he really likes Scorsese's films and that he has enough admiration for both the same director and his filmography, but he disagreed with Scorsese's statements and commented that those words were intended to be an attempt to confront Marvel, and like him there are many who are for or against, which determines new and finally that it is not so much something that can be categorized as good or bad, but it depends on the criteria of each person to think similarly or contrary to that of this director, because in the end everyone enjoys movies for different reasons, regardless of the nature of it.
