La Santa/ The Holy

Three nights had passed with their early mornings and the fever was not letting up, I felt the chills move me to my bones and a feeling of pressure in the front part of my head. As best I could, I kept walking, but I felt that my strength was leaving me and that at any moment I would die. Suddenly, my legs lost strength and I fell to the ground, kneeling, and that's when I saw her.

On my knees, I felt that woman give me something to drink and then put some sticky branches on my hot forehead. At that moment, I retched violently and then vomited a thick green liquid. I think I spent a few minutes expelling that strange fluid and then I fainted: I fell into a deep sleep.

At times, I would open my eyes and I would see a number of zamuros flying in circles in the sky, but I would also see that woman smearing her hands with saliva and running it over my head, making crosses and praying unknown prayers in a strange language. Then I would close my eyes again, feeling dizzy and a thousand thorns in my temples.

Estaba sonreída y olía a inciensos y a flores.

I don't know how much time passed, I only know that one morning I opened my eyes and saw that woman's face close to mine. She was smiling and smelled of incense and flowers. She didn't speak, she just tied a cord with a red sachet around my neck. Then she left without looking back. After that, I was able to continue my journey and I never took off the amulet that the holy woman, the one who saved me from death, gave me.
