Tomás thinks about his sister's words again, of course he can't explain that, in the same way that she couldn't. But did Sara really hear all that? He looks back at his uncle.

On the other side of the room, the patient, half covered by the sheets, had exhibited a face furrowed by suffering (cancer is a painful disease, there is no doubt about that), but in the last hours, Tomás, thinks he has discovered a certain placidity in his countenance. But he is sure that no placidity can report the fact that someone has been consumed by an illness and for that reason has been evicted by doctors and sent home to simply ... to simply die.

Uncle Matías has been one of the people who has most comforted his life and of those who have had the most participation in it. Since he was little, while his mother gave her all in the shift job to support her offspring (his father had never wanted to know anything about his two children), he spent long periods of time with him and his aunt Rebeca, who died six years ago who, despite being demanding and nagging, was the best person he had ever met, perhaps that is why Uncle Matías used to say that it would not be long before he followed in his footsteps, but fortunately a lot of time passed and it was a time that Tomás he was grateful but that still seemed too short, he refused to let the uncle cease to be part of his life. And seeing him prostrate in bed was something that demolished him inside. At eighty-four years, his uncle had remained totally healthy, without any of those ailments that usually consume the elderly and was always willing to listen and give opinions and advice, he was someone to trust with his problems, so that cancer would eventually take one of the most important beings in the family.

A slight reaction from the patient brought her out of his thoughts. His uncle opened her eyes and looked at him for a few seconds, then closed them again. That was normal in the last two days, Uncle Matías no longer seemed to recognize those around him or at least he did not seem to be there. Tomás thought once more about the words of his sister and how unlikely the matter was. A tear began to appear on his cheeks and he started to leave the room. He immediately walked towards the door, but when he stepped over the threshold and pulled the door behind him a sound stopped him. The voice of his uncle was heard from inside –Rebeca! I thought I wouldn't see you today. Tomás is surprised and paralyzed. Again he remembers Sara's words, she had told him that last night he contemplated his uncle while he spoke alone but apparently he did it with someone he called Rebeca and from the things that she heard she could affirm that it was his deceased aunt. "So you also brought your mother," Tomás heard the sick man saying now. That didn't make any sense. Without letting go of the door handle he thought of returning to the room. His aunt Eleonora was heading towards him, accompanied by her two children. What's up ...? –The newcomer tried to ask before Tomás's perplexity, but Uncle Matías's voices gave her the answer. -Oh God! He's delirious! She exclaimed a second later, shedding tears. When they entered the room the patient's apparent conversation had turned into an unintelligible murmur and an instant later his eyes were closed for the last time.

Aquello no tenía ningún sentido. .

The experience that Tomás went through may be strange to most of the people who have seen a loved one die, but this is not the common denominator for everyone. A significant group of people have reported hearing terminally ill people speak incoherent things just as if they were having a conversation with someone else. Sometimes such conversations are nothing more than unintelligible babbling, but the most disturbing thing is that in a large number of cases they mention the names of individuals already deceased as former members of the family group or people who have been very close to the dying person. Of course, to explain this we usually say that the patient is "delirious" or "delirious." But this is only one way in which science has tried to give a rational explanation of the phenomenon, that is, that, for traditional medicine, in those last minutes of life the patient experiences a pathological disturbance of his mental faculties. In other words, in addition to how serious the patient may be, he or she goes crazy. Is this explanation consistent? For those who deny the existence of the afterlife, it is probably valid, but if we uphold the thesis of a life after the moment of death we will conceive it as one of the most foolish arguments in medicine.

Spiritual Existence

So why might we have these incoherent conversations before we pass away?
First of all, we must ask ourselves who we really are. Do we consider ourselves just a bundle of flesh, bones, organs, and biological systems that make up what we call the body, or are we something else? If the answer is that we are just the body, there is nothing more to say and the delusions thesis is more than enough. But if we believe and are convinced that our life goes far beyond a body, we can understand that our real existence is purely spiritual regardless of whether we inhabit a human body. Of course, a full spiritual existence involves magnanimous, yet incomprehensible, faculties. And of course, while we inhabit a body that is limited to five senses, while we go out of our way to subsist, maintain ours and fulfill the designs that the Almighty may have put into our existence, we cannot assimilate the scope of those faculties.
We must also emphasize that death is nothing other than the liberation of the spirit and that this should represent the recovery of all those faculties of which we were deprived while we were living. Recovery? Why would we talk about taking back something we never had while we were living?

Existencia Espiritual

These would be some questions that we would ask ourselves about matter and the answer is that in principle we never had them while we lived, but we did possess them before inhabiting a human body, before being born, so that prior to that fact we already fully existed as a spirit. What happens at the moment of birth? Without going deeply into such a controversial and speculative subject, we will say that the Almighty decides that the time has come for us to go to the physical world for which we require a human body and in this way we are born. But one of the most striking issues is that as newborn children we have not yet been totally stripped of the faculties of spiritual life and one of them is the possibility of seeing what others cannot, speak of spirits. Probably more than once we could find that the baby in his crib begins to laugh alone or when someone holds him in his arms he begins to laugh for no apparent reason and this is where the old grandmothers say that "he laughs with the little angels." And this is a fairly well-directed explanation because in those cases we could affirm that the baby smiles with spiritual beings, entities with whom it could be sharing until recently (when it was still only spirit) and it can do so because that brief stay in a body human has not been enough to eliminate those faculties. Obviously, the fact of beginning to train ourselves from the first moments of life to master the capacities of our body and interact in a physical world makes any other faculty lose importance and end up disappearing (although many people can maintain certain psychic aptitudes until later stages of his existence, even throughout his life, but this will be a topic for another post)

What happens then when we are on the threshold of death? The threshold of death is a decisive moment in which the spirit, still in the body, already seeks to interact with spiritual entities. In other words, the person momentarily regains that faculty that he may have had as a baby and his spirit was not only entertained in his new interaction with that newborn body. Thus, he can already interact with his fellow beings from beyond, understanding, of course, that no matter how alive and healthy we are, those beings will always be our fellow beings since our real existence is primarily spiritual. It should also be noted that these conversations do not have to be entirely defined and clear either. Sometimes they are given as an unintelligible monologue similar to that of people speaking while asleep. Equally surprising is the fact that the threshold of death does not necessarily constitute the only moment in which a person can interact in this way with the afterlife, an individual, product of a fever or some very intense ailment can live that experience and tell afterwards who you saw or who you interacted with at the time. In short, such a phenomenon could be explained as a faculty or a psychic ability but never as delusion or delusion.
