Los barros de Valdevaqueros // The muds of Valdevaqueros

At Punta Paloma, where the Valdevaqueros inlet ends in Tarifa, there is a very soft ash-coloured sedimentary rock. Some locals say that it is composed of organic remains. To get to Punta Paloma you have to walk several kilometres as it is far from any road or path and the only access point is the beach.

Tourists arrive and pick up handfuls of pebbles from the small hill and take them to some rocks near the sea where they are crushed and mixed with water until a fine mud is left. This mud is applied to the skin until it dries.

I have not been near Punta Paloma for several years and I have been impressed by how the hole has been enlarged by the use of the rock by tourists. From being a small hole in the hill it is now a passage several metres wide. I even saw people filling bags to take home.

It is true that when you dive into the sea and remove the mud, the skin is very soft but it is probably because the pores are covered with mud and the skin feels like vinyl.

This year I have put a bit of mud on my face from the leftovers of some that I had already smashed to send the typical photograph to my friends so they can laugh a bit. But the best thing is to dive into the cold but crystal clear water of the Valdevaqueros inlet.
