PALMWINE AND ZOBO: TRADITIONAL DRINKS IN MY COUNTRY

Tell us about traditional drinks (alcoholic or non-alcaholic, it doesn't matter) or popular drinks in your country/city. If you don't have or don't know any of it, tell us about your favorite drink.

My country Nigeria is so blessed with variety of indigenous drinks, we have kunu, zobo, palm wine, ogogoro, pito, ginger, tiger nut, poki poki, fura de nunu and so many more. But the one I am really really acquainted with is the palm wine and zobo drink. While the palm wine is rapped Form a drink, the zobo is made at home by cooking it. Again, the palm wine can pass for the western wine and the zobo for juice considering its refreshing taste

HOW WE GET PALMWINE
From what I know and I have seen, the palm wine is tapped from the top of the palm tree by collecting the sap, after making an incision on the bark of the tree, a pipe is connected to a gourd which collects the sap. The person who taps the wine is called a palm wine tapper. It is very common in this part of Africa and while it is love, it is also dangerous when tapping it. The palm wine tapper may loose guard and fall from the top of the tree.

The palm wine is used in different occasions and for different reasons. Traditionally, it is used in marriages, child naming ceremony, festivals, bride price (engagement) and it can just be for relaxation or entertaining visitors. Local bars sell this in company of roasted meat, peppered Ponmo (cowskin), peppered meat and so on

Zobo (hibiscus tea)

In the market, you can get a bottle of zobo for as low as #50. To prepare it personally all that is needed is the dry zobo leaves, pineapple for flavor, sweetener, ginger and water. This is a healthy drink, no wonder it's popular.
