La primera vez que escuché el término Síndrome de Burnout, fue a finales del año 2013 cuando cursaba la materia Seminario II de la Especialización en Ciencia Ambientales que estaba haciendo. Resulta que a ésta asignatura ingresaron dos estudiantes de otra especialización, Salud Ocupacional, que en su momento no pudieron cursarla por compromisos laborales. En seminario II, había que desarrollar un tema de investigación, por supuesto la gran mayoría de nosotros referentes a temas ambientales, cuando ellos se presentaron, dos profesionales en el área de medicina, y compartieron su tema, Síndrome de Burnout, ninguno sabía de que se trataba, por lo que ellos tuvieron que explicarlo. ![IMG-20230905-WA0012.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmY9XhNCiJm2nw3VdzscJkoUN4eh4zXnUmjmN1VYR5gbob/IMG-20230905-WA0012.jpg) Una vez aclarado el tema, me quedé pensando en mi compañera de apartamento Rossana, quien no solo trabajaba todo el día, de lunes a sábado y algunos domingos, también estaba cursando su segunda carrera de pregrado, Derecho, durante las noches. Por lo que era una mujer muy ocupada y con poco descanso y a pesar de vivir en el mismo sitio, prácticamente nos veíamos los sábados en las noches y el domingo. Así que ese sábado cuando la vi, le compartí lo que nos habían explicado del Síndrome de Burnout, puesto que ella tenía un fuerte insomnio, el bruxismo estaba dañando sus dientes, y siempre estaba irritable, y me parecía que ella podía estar padeciendo esto. Dos años más tarde, la que sufría de insomnio era yo, irritabilidad, dolor de cabeza constante, vivía acelerada, episodios de rabia en mi trabajo. Me había compenetrado tanto en mi trabajo, asumía responsabilidades que no eran mías pero que me satisfacía hacerlas, además tenía que cumplir un plan de pago para la adquisición de una vivienda, por lo que dejé que me absorbiera más al trabajar más horas de sobretiempo, así como trabajos durante los fines de semanas y feriados. No le tomé importancia, me acostumbré a vivir así por un tiempo considerable. Pero todo colapsa. Tuve varios episodios de neuralgia del trigémino del lado derecho. No podía concentrarme en el trabajo. Me estaba quemando. Me sentía como zombi. No solo acudí al médico, reflexioné sobe mi situación. ![IMG-20230905-WA0011.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmdz2Um78nt8nd2fsuWcveEBaX7DupB4haDSQHRKo5C7dy/IMG-20230905-WA0011.jpg) Cuando estamos quemados, podemos cometer muchos errores en nuestro trabajo, inclusive representamos un riesgo y podemos exponer la vida de otras personas como la nuestra o la integridad de un equipo. Nuestro trabajo puede perder calidad y nuestro trato hacia los compañeros o personal a cargo puede verse afectado por la constante irritabilidad que padecemos. Debemos estar consciente de ello y hacernos responsable de ésta peligrosa situación, ya que muchos accidentes que ocurren en el trabajo son a causa del agotamiento generalizado. Esa experiencia fue parte del inicio para aprender a descansar. Dejé de trabajar los domingos, ese día lo tomaba para descanso total, dormir más, planificaba todo para evitar cocinar ese día, como también, lavar o hacer cualquier oficio de la casa. Empecé a salir nuevamente con mis amistades. Y cuando terminé con mis compromisos de pagos, podía viajar a visitar a mis padres, ir a la playa, al cine. Tuve que hacer un plan acelerado de descanso para poder reponerme. Durante mi jornada laboral, también tomaba pequeños momentos de descanso para reponer fuerzas. Después de cada tarea realizada, me levantaba de la silla, me estiraba, tenía como una pequeña rutina de ejercicios. Después de comer sobre todo en la hora de almuerzo, en vez de salir corriendo a la computadora, tomaba un té o café con mis compañeros charlando de todo. Aprendí dos cosas además, que eran puntos positivos para mi descanso laboral, la primera a delegar funciones, y la segunda a no llevar el trabajo para mi casa. Me liberé de sobrecargas innecesarias y darle importancia a otros aspectos de mi vida. Un error que cometemos muchas personas es que nos dejamos absorber mucho por el trabajo, sobre todo cuando lo que hacemos nos apasiona, o tenemos el afán de querer controlar todo, llegamos hasta el punto de distanciarnos de lo familiar, de lo recreativo, de lo sentimental, pero cuando por causa de eso nos enfermamos, porque nos quemamos, es que reconocemos lo indispensables del descanso. ![IMG_20230817_081539.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmVw551ktmfJ6WH5WCeFaJNKXvRAN5CvZs8hzXYwYajk3M/IMG_20230817_081539.jpg) El descanso es una necesidad vital para todos los seres humanos, permite recuperar energías, que nuestro cuerpo se reestablezca, por ende tiene grandes beneficios para nuestra memoria, sistema inmunológico, al mejorar nuestra energía, mejora nuestra concentración y capacidad mental. El descanso evita padecer el síndrome de estar quemado. Y laboralmente siempre hay un momento en el que podemos parar para recuperarnos y prepararnos para continuar con nuestras actividades. Ahora le doy mucha importancia al descanso. El cual no solamente se refiere a dormir bien, y tomar siestas durante el día, también se refiere al descanso físico a través de actividades de relajación como yoga, meditación, contemplación, caminata, masajes, entre otros. Particularmente, en vista del fuerte problema de insomnio que tuve, realizo actividades que me ayudan a conciliar el sueño sin la necesidad de tomar algún tipo de pastillas o medicamento, leo antes dormir, como suficiente antes de las 7 y 30 pm, y algunas veces tomo una taza de tilo o manzanilla. Como ahora trabajo en casa, procuro hacer una siesta de 20 a 30 minutos. Y por supuesto no pueden faltar las caminatas y conectarme con la naturaleza. Mi día de descanso que ahora son los lunes si debo hacer alguna diligencia procuro hacer todo en la mañana, para que el resto de día sea de descanso, disfrute y distracción. No solo ha sido gratificante poder participar en esta iniciativa de nuestro amigo @emiliorios, también ha sido un recordatorio de darle importancia al descanso y conocer todos los riesgos del exceso de trabajo, y eso lo agradezco mucho.

The first time I heard the term Burnout Syndrome was at the end of 2013 when I was taking the subject Seminar II of the Specialization in Environmental Science that I was doing. It turns out that two students from another specialization, Occupational Health, who at the time could not take it due to work commitments, were admitted to this course. So she was a very busy woman with little rest and despite living in the same place, we practically saw each other on Saturday nights and Sunday. So that Saturday when I saw her, I shared with her what had been explained to us about Burnout Syndrome, since she had severe insomnia, the bruxism was damaging her teeth, and she was always irritable, and it seemed to me that she might be suffering from this. Two years later, I was the one suffering from insomnia, irritability, constant headaches, fast-paced living, episodes of rage at work. I had become so engrossed in my work, I was taking on responsibilities that were not mine but that I was happy to do, plus I had to fulfill a payment plan for the purchase of a house, so I let it absorb me more by working more overtime hours, as well as working on weekends and holidays. I didn't make a big deal out of it, I got used to living like this for a considerable time. But everything collapses. I had several episodes of trigeminal neuralgia on my right side. I couldn't concentrate at work. I was burning out. I felt like a zombie. Our work can lose quality and our treatment towards our colleagues or personnel in charge can be affected by the constant irritability we suffer. We must be aware of this and take responsibility for this dangerous situation, since many accidents that occur at work are caused by generalized exhaustion. That experience was part of the beginning of learning to rest. I stopped working on Sundays, I took that day for total rest, to sleep more, I planned everything to avoid cooking that day, as well as washing or doing any housework. I started going out again with my friends. And when I finished with my payment commitments, I could travel to visit my parents, go to the beach, to the movies. I had to make an accelerated rest plan to be able to recuperate. During my workday, I also took short breaks to recharge my batteries. After every task I did, I would get up from my chair, stretch, I had like a little exercise routine. After lunch, especially at lunchtime, instead of rushing off to the computer, I would have a cup of tea or coffee with my colleagues, chatting about everything. I also learned two things that were positive points for my work break, the first was to delegate functions, and the second was not to take my work home with me. I freed myself from unnecessary overload and gave importance to other aspects of my life. A mistake that many people make is that we let ourselves be absorbed by work, especially when we are passionate about what we do, or we have the desire to control everything, we get to the point of distancing ourselves from the family, recreational, sentimental, but when because of that we get sick, because we get burned, is that we recognize the indispensability of rest. ![IMG_20230817_081539.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmVw551ktmfJ6WH5WCeFaJNKXvRAN5CvZs8hzXYwYajk3M/IMG_20230817_081539.jpg) Rest is a vital need for all human beings, it allows us to recover our energy, our body to reestablish itself, therefore it has great benefits for our memory, immune system, by improving our energy, improves our concentration and mental capacity. Rest avoids suffering from burnout syndrome. And at work there is always a time when we can stop to recover and get ready to continue with our activities. Now I give a lot of importance to rest. Which not only refers to sleeping well, and taking naps during the day, it also refers to physical rest through relaxation activities such as yoga, meditation, contemplation, walking, massages, among others. Particularly, in view of the strong insomnia problem I had, I do activities that help me to fall asleep without the need to take any kind of pills or medication, I read before going to sleep, I eat enough before 7:30 pm, and sometimes I take a cup of linden or chamomile. Since I now work at home, I try to take a 20-30 minute nap. And of course I take walks and connect with nature. My day off, which is now on Mondays, if I have to run an errand I try to do everything in the morning, so that the rest of the day is for rest, enjoyment and distraction. Not only has it been rewarding to be able to participate in this initiative of our friend @emiliorios, it has also been a reminder to give importance to rest and to know all the risks of overwork, and I really appreciate that.
