Use Melee monster in Ruleset Thorns, break the rule to surprised the enemy

Greetings to all Splinterlands players! The new season has brought exciting new battles and rewards. The reward system has shifted from giving one card for one BCX, to offering several cards in one chest, depending on the player's current league. Although this provides more cards, unfortunately, it is impossible to sell them. As a result, earnings may be lower this season, You can still make money from Chaos Legion Packs and the SPS, though.

Battle Weekly Challenge is a popular event held by Splinterlands. The theme actually is monster Grund, but I don't have good battles using Grund monsters, so we change the theme to Desert Dragon and Carnage Titan, two monsters of the Dragon Element. These two creatures boast high damage capabilities, though they may be slower than other creatures of their type. In the strategy section, we will discuss the specific features of these monsters in more detail and their advantages to becoming a slow monsters.

I recently fought in Gold League Modern Format with my scholar account from Balthazar. My deck consists of max level chaos legion cards, some neutral cards, and reward cards acquired through both purchases and delegate gifts from other scholars.

This guide is designed to help those who are new to the game or who are playing on a budget. It can help them reach the Diamond or Champion League by using more affordable monsters instead of renting expensive ones. You can check my account cards, with these budget cards I can reach champion 3.

I apologize for any errors or inadequacies in my writing as I am not very proficient in writing. I will do my best to clearly explain the strategy I use in the hopes of assisting new players/beginners to improve their win rate.

Ruleset

From left to right :

  • Reverse Speed, Monsters with the lowest Speed attack first and have the highest chance of evading attacks.
  • Briar Patch, all monsters have thorns ability. Thorns ability makes melee monster take damage by 2 if attacking monster with thorns ability
  • Mana Cap 46.
  • Can use the element Water, Earth, and Dragon.

My Lineup and strategy

Common tips for reverse ruleset :

  • Try to pick monsters with 1 speed because they have the best chance of evading Melee and Ranged attacks. Beware of monsters with Enrage and Last Stand, these abilities increase speed when activated (credit to Splintercard)
  • If you can, try not to use the summoner with the skill to increase the friendly monster's speed or decrease the enemy monster's speed.

Common tips for Briar Patch :

  • Don't use monsters with a melee attack.
  • Focus to deal with monsters who have Magic and range attack.

I think the best element for this ruleset is the earth using summoner Obsidian, it has a big chance that the enemy will use this element. Earth elements have many monsters with magic attacks and slow speed.

We will not use Obsidian but we want to counter it by using a monster who can deal with magic. Before I already check from the enemy previous battle that the enemy has Doctor Blight, this is a dangerous monster because have affliction skill (if the monster is inflicted by this status, can't heal) and poison skill.

We need a tanker to deal with magic attack our option is using this monster :

  • Baakjira (water element), have tank heal skill and Void armor (decrease the magic attack by half), can't attack.
  • Djinn Oshanus (water element), have high speed. We don't have it in our deck.
  • Void Dragon (high speed, not suitable in reverse ruleset)
  • Wave Brood, a monster with taunt skill (all monster will attack him if can), have void armor, and have 1 speed.

For the summoner, I only bring Kelya Frendul in the water element and Quick in the Dragon element. This is easy to choose because many earth monsters only have 1 speed so we choose Quick because the monster speed can't decrease more than 1. If we used Kelya all our monsters will have increased speed by 1.

46 mana cap is a high mana battle, and we don't have a ranged monster with great damage so I decided to surprise the enemy by bringing the melee monster with the big attack as our main attacker. I will focus fire on the first position monster. Yes, it will hurt every time attack the enemy, so we bring another monster to recover the armor and HP. As the main tanker, we will use Wave Brood.

This formation's strength is to inflict great damage on the enemy monster in the first position. and It is good enough to defend against magic, range, and melee.

The monster lineup that we will use is as follows:

The summoner

My summoner Quix the Devious from Chaos Legion Card, can decrease the enemy speed and damage of the range monster by 1.

Desert Dragon, first position - Attacker

This monster is put in this position as an attacker.

Strengths :

  • Very high damage of 5.
  • Have piercing skills, you can see the description in the picture, example if the enemy has 1 armor and 4 HP hit by this monster, it will die.
  • If hit by an enemy melee attack has a 50% chance to hit back the enemy.
  • Have armor.
  • Have 2 speeds, it's usually a weakness because of the slow speed, but in this ruleset, it's become an advantage.

Weakness :

  • For 7 mana and can only attack in the first position the HP is small.

Carnage Titan, second position - Attacker

This is our 2nd attacker to attack the first position monster, because of the skill reach it can attack from this position.

Strength :

  • Has very high damage because of the skill double strike. Every round will attack twice so the total damage becomes 6.
  • Shield skill makes damage from melee, ranged attack, and thorns reduced by half.
  • Big Armor.

Weakness :

  • For 11 mana cost the HP is not that great.

Merdaali Guardian, third position - Support

This is a monster to counter the effect of thorns ruleset. It can restore Armor and HP monster in the first position.

Spirit Hoarder, fourth position - support

I chose this monster, it seems a bit of a gamble, because most likely the enemy will bring 2 monsters with the affliction skill, Doctor Blight and Goblin Psychic, but I'm also on guard if the enemy does the same thing and brings a melee monster that can attack Wave Brood, then it can help restore HP. After Wave Brood dies, if the enemy brings a monster with a sneak skill, it can help Angelic Mandarin recover his HP. Blind skills will increase the ability to avoid melee and range monster attacks.

Angelic Mandarin Fifth Position - Attacker and Support

I use this monster because have the skill Triage to Heal the tanker in the last position, the attack is not so great though.

Wave Brood - Tanker & Attacker

This is our main tanker, a ranged monster with taunt skill all enemy monsters will hit this monster if they can, it is strong against magic, have void armor can reduce magic damage by half. The HP is very big.
Very suitable monster to use in this ruleset the speed is only 1.

The Battle

Round 1:
The battle starts with the application of buffs and debuffs.
All enemy monsters have very low speeds compared to us. No monster die in this round. But our monster manages to bring the enemy HP Mycelic Slipspawn to 1. Luck is on our side, the affliction skills are not active in Wave Brood.

Round 2:
In this round, we can see how powerful our melee attacker.

  • Enemy Side :
    • Mycelic Slipspawn die hit by Wave Brood.
    • Centauri Magic die hit by Angelic Mandarin.
  • Our Side :
    • Wave Brood got poisoned by Doctor Blight.

Round 3:

  • Enemy Side :
    • Sporcerer HP only left 5 after attacked by Spirit Hoarder and die attacked by Desert Dragon who inflict 5 damage.
    • Goblin Psychic dies attacked by Carnage Titan Double attack.
  • Our Side :
    • Desert Dragon die in this round after killing Sporcerer and got hit back by the thorns effect.
    • In this round Wave Brood got inflicted by Affliction status, so can't be healed anymore.

Victory is within our grasp! The enemy only has two monsters left Gobin Tower and Doctor Blight. Goblin Tower is already in the first position and cannot attack. In this round, we can see that victory will be ours.

Round 4 :
No monster die in this round

Round 5 :

  • Enemy Side :
Goblin Tower Die was attacked by Carnage Titan double attack.

Round 6 :

  • Enemy Side :
Doctor Blight dies after receiving damage from Carnage titan.

Did your strategy work?

Not working fully because he put the mycelic slipspawn to position no 1, it has forcefield skill (attack 5 or greater will only inflict damage of 1), which makes the attack of desert dragon reduce to 1. Fortunately, the Carnage Titan attack is powerful enough to help kill the Mycelic Slipspawn.
After Mycelic Slipspawn dies, it's easy to kill the next enemy.

The formation of the enemy is like my guess will be Doctor Blight and Goblin Psychic, we are lucky enough that affliction skill only active in round 3, so give more time for Desert Dragon and Carnage Titan to kill enemy frontline.
When Wave Brood Die we already destroy enemy frontline tanker and attacker. Only Left Goblin Tower and Doctor Blight.

Let's talk a bit about the enemy strategy. Enemy strategy is to counter magic and range attack :

  • Counter magic by bringing Goblin Psychic and Sporcerer monster with silence skill (reduce enemy magic by 1).
  • Counter Range with Centauri Magic who has the skill Return Fire (When hit with a Ranged attack, Monsters with Return Fire will return reduced damage back to their attacker).

The enemy strategy not working well with our monster because our main attacker monster is a melee monster.
Sometimes we need to break the rule to surprise the enemy,
For using melee attack in thorns ruleset it's better if we bring a monster who is supported by skill heal or repair armor.
