Mermaids... this word reminds me of Peter Pan in Neverland, when he visited the Mermaid Lake in the company of Wendy and these beautiful creatures, upon seeing her in her nightgown, started pulling her hair and throwing water at her. It also reminds me of Ariel and the whole funny story with Sebastian and Flounder. These stories are fun and cute, but there really are some murky and horror stories that hover around these fantastic creatures. It was late 1950 when the newlyweds, husband and wife Baute decided to spend their last few days of vacation at sea before returning to everyday life, you know, work and housework, as they had recently purchased a boat to sail and wanted to use it for the first time. The Baute couple was composed of Leandro Baute, husband and provider of the household, and Maria, wife and sweet housewife.

Already at sea, the couple did not imagine that they would encounter a hostile sea, full of strong waves and them, sailing against the current. Leandro's experience at sea was quite limited. He had sailed a few times, but in the company of experts and he was always a passenger. Suddenly it began to rain heavily and with this torrential rain, night began to fall on them. Everything happened very fast. The strong tide capsized the boat, leaving Leandro and Maria adrift, clinging to a cooler that they managed to rescue.

Maria had loved the sea since she was a child, she loved to lie on it and float, to swim for a long time. But this was different. It was terrifying. The night over their heads like an immense dark and cruel shadow and they, in the middle of the ocean, to their fate. They could only pray that someone would rescue them. But as the hours went by, their hopes were fading, as was their strength. They were exhausted, terrified and terrified. Suddenly, in the distance, a melodious song could be heard; it was a melody that was penetrating their senses, invading them little by little and making Leandro gain strength as if he had been injected with a dose of adrenaline.

He told Maria that she should swim to the place where the seductive and enveloping melody was coming from and call for help. She was terrified of being left alone, but he was convinced she should swim there. He gave her a soft kiss on her chapped lips and walked away with the promise that he would return to her rescue. And there Maria was left alone in the growing darkness, frightened and cold, while Leandro swam with all his strength towards the place where that beautiful melody came from.

Minutes passed and the melody faded away and with it, Maria's hopes, giving way to an indescribable fear. Maria does not know how much time had passed since Leandro had left with strong strokes, but she felt exhausted, frightened and the desire to let herself be defeated was winning the battle. It was just beginning to get light, when she felt she was not alone. Something was moving around her, a shark? she wondered, when she heard again the same song that had made her husband run away in search of help. It was a beautiful voice, singing a seductive and alluring song. It was like celestial music that made her relax a little and look around. She could only catch a glimpse of a very large fish tail dipping into the water. Then, on the other side, she saw another tail dipping in the same way.

Suddenly, a hideous creature with a humanoid face emerged from the depths. It was so creepy that Maria was speechless. This creature, Maria thought, is a mermaid. Her hair was sparse and clung to her misshapen face in an unpleasant manner. Its eyes were two black, glowing spheres. It had no nose and possessed remnants of sharp, pointed teeth in a terrifying mouth. She was so frightened at the sight of the mermaid that she tried to remember that when she was a child and something frightened her, she would close her eyes. So Maria closed her eyes and let the melody envelop her with a strange sensation of being at home again, while crying took over her. Legend has it that every time there is a storm in that place, the sweet notes can be heard in the distance, as if bathed in a sad cry.

Sirenas... esta palabra me hace recordar a Peter Pan en El País de Nunca Jamás, cuando visitó el Lago de Las Sirenas en compañía de Wendy y estas hermosas criaturas al verla en camisón, comenzaron a tirarle de los cabellos y arrojarle agua. También me recuerda a Ariel y toda la divertida historia con Sebastián y Flounder. Estas historias son divertidas y bonitas, pero realmente hay algunas historias turbias y de horror que se ciernen en torno a estas fantásticas criaturas. Corría el final del año 1950 cuando los recién casados, esposos Baute decidieron pasar los últimos días de vacaciones en el mar, antes de volver a la vida cotidiana, ya saben, el trabajo y las labores del hogar, pues habían comprado recientemente un bote para navegar y querían estrenarlo.

La pareja Baute estaba compuesta por Leandro Baute, esposo y proveedor del hogar y María, esposa y dulce ama de casa. Ya en altamar la pareja no imaginaba que se encontrarían con un mar hostil, lleno de fuerte oleaje y a ellos, navegando en contra de la corriente. La experiencia de Leandro en el mar, era bastante limitada. Había navegado algunas veces, pero en compañía de expertos y él siempre iba de pasajero. De pronto comenzó a llover copiosamente y con esta torrencial lluvia, la noche comenzaba a caer sobre ellos. Todo sucedió muy rápido. La fuerte marea volcó la embarcación haciendo que Leandro y María quedaran a la deriva, aferrados a una hielera que lograron rescatar.

María amaba el mar desde que era niña, le encantaba echarse sobre él y flotar, nadar por mucho rato. Pero esto era diferente. Era aterrador. La noche sobre sus cabezas como una inmensa sombra oscura y cruel y ellos, en medio del océano, a su suerte. Solo podían orar porque alguien los rescatase. Pero conforme fueron transcurriendo las horas, sus esperanzas se iban desvaneciendo, así como se iban desvaneciendo también sus fuerzas. Estaban agotados, ateridos y aterrorizados. De pronto, a lo lejos, se escuchó un canto melodioso; era una melodía que iba penetrando en sus sentidos, invadiéndolos poco a poco y haciendo que Leandro cobrase fuerzas como si le hubiesen inyectado una dosis de adrenalina.

Le dijo a María que debía nadar hasta el lugar de donde provenía esa seductora y envolvente melodía y pedir ayuda. Ella estaba atemorizada de quedarse sola, pero él estaba convencido de que debía nadar hasta allá. Le dio un suave beso en sus agrietados labios y se alejó con la promesa de que volvería en su rescate. Y allí quedó María sola, en medio de la creciente oscuridad, asustada y con frío, mientras Leandro nadaba con todas sus fuerzas en dirección hacia el lugar donde provenía aquella hermosa melodía.

Pasaron los minutos y la melodía se fue desvaneciendo y con ella, las esperanzas de María, cediendo el paso a un miedo indescriptible. María no sabe cuánto tiempo había transcurrido desde que Leandro se alejó con fuertes brazadas, pero se sentía exhausta, asustada y las ganas de dejarse vencer estaban ganando la batalla. Estaba comenzando a amanecer, cuando sintió que no estaba sola. Algo se movía a su alrededor. ¿Un tiburón? se preguntó, cuando volvió a escuchar el mismo canto que hizo que su esposo se alejara en busca de ayuda. Era una voz hermosa, entonando un canto seductor y atrayente. Era como música celestial que la hizo relajarse un poco y mirar a su alrededor. Solo pudo atisbar una cola de pez muy grande que se sumergía dentro del agua. Luego, al otro lado, vio otra cola sumergirse de igual manera.

Repentinamente, una criatura horrenda con un rostro humanoide emergió de las profundidades. Era tan espeluznante que María quedó sin habla. Esta criatura, pensó María, es una sirena. Su cabello era escaso y se le adhería al deforme rostro de manera desagradable. Sus ojos eran dos esferas negras y brillantes. No tenía nariz y poseía restos de dientes afilados y puntiagudos en una boca aterradora. Era tanto el miedo que sintió al ver a la sirena, que trató de recordar que cuando era niña y algo le causaba temor, ella cerraba los ojos. Así que María fue cerrando sus ojos y dejó que la melodía la envolviera con una extraña sensación de estar de nuevo en casa, mientras el llanto se apoderaba de ella. Cuenta la leyenda que cada vez que hay tormenta en ese paraje, se oye a lo lejos las dulces notas como bañadas en un triste llanto.
