I started playing splinterlands 2 years ago, it was more complicated at first to me, so i totally know how you feel. The key component is simple. I was telling @hopestylist not too long ago that "it's better to dip a toe in, to feel if the water is cold, chilled or hot before diving deep.
The key component is pretty easy " Be determined to learn '' Be determined to set aside some time and dig in the cranks and crooks of splinterlands site.
When i first started i took my time to read out the key components of the game on the Splinterlands Website
So am just gonna break it down for you into
Simple Facts,
To start earning from your battles, you need to purchase the Summoners spellbook to become a real battle mage, it's actually worth $10 but that doesn't mean you can't play, Without purchasing the spell book you can play and learn more about the game, like i wrote dip a toe in before diving deep.
To break things down they are two set of cards
"Summoners and Monsters"
Summoners card Uses magic to call upon various monsters that exist within the same elements
Monsters card actually do the Fighting; they are creatures that are called forth by a summoner to do battle.
So practically a Summoner from the earth element can call forth monsters living in the earth nature (bushes, forest and tress)
They are basically 6 Elements you can choose your summoners from
As clearly as it states and list.
Now let's take a closer look at a Card and what it contains
Each card has a name its just like going into a wrestling show, all players has their own stage names which is use by fans for hailing them. it's just the same with card, each card has its own name which is called a "Character" .
Mana cost: The more powerful the card the higher the mana cost
Stats: These are the physical power, speed, toughness and health of the character.
Element/Rarity: The Icon Represent the Elements and the color indicates rarity which is (common, rare, epic, or legendary)
Name: The name of the card which is the character.
Levels: A higher level translate to a more powerful card which increase Stats or unlock abilities
Experience is gained by combining duplicate cards, A green bar indicates your progress to the next level.
Abilities: These are special skills or powers a character posses which are used during battles.
There are tons of abilities you can click here to learn about the various abilities, their symbols and what it does, so as to recognize them if a character posses them
Starting A Battle,
Now you understand what a card entains, You understand Elements stats and abilities, its time To choose a summoner
Navigate to The Battle Icon, as a freshman i suggest you start playing Modern rather than wild.
Once you click on battle you'll know if there is a Ruleset to follow or not. Also the Mana cap which is the Mana limit for the battle will be given.
You'll also be giving a countdown and must choose your Summoner and monsters before the timer runs out in other words you got to be fast. At first it will be difficult to meet up with timer, but after studying the various cards and knowing the particular ones needed for battle, you'll can even choose a team for battle within 30 seconds.

For this battle i was given the "Ferocity ruleset" which means all monsters have the Fury ability, remember we talked about learning the various types of abilities? you can navigate to that page to learn what the Fury ability is to monsters who posses it.
Pick A Team
Time to pick a team for battle, you can start playing with the starter cards already fix on splinterlands if you're low on budget purchasing a new card the only disavantage is; When using a starter card you wont earn from your battles so as time goes on its ideal you rent or purchase new set of cards.
I clearly go for Summoners belonging to the Water or Earth Element because am use to it and love the unique strong monsters these elements has.
For this battle i choose a summoner from the water Element called Keyla Frendul.
I also go for these Summoners belonging to the earth element if i dont pick Keyla.
Done choosing a Summoner?. It will give out a list of monsters belonging to the Water nature.
Front row: Monsters here are called tank monsters there are like the muscles of the team and practically should have a strong mana cost capable to lead the team.
I practically used these cards as my Tank in the water element
Choose these as tank if i go for Earth summoners
Second row: You can either choose a goto tank, the monster in this row takes over after the tank is killied so probably it should have smilar strength and capabilities like the tank.
You can either pick from the list of tank masters that aint choosen for battle, pick them in place of goto tank
All these can go well
Third row: I always put a Tank healer on this row, a tank healers are monsters who posses the healing ability and heals the monster in the tank position on every rounds. Its ideal not to go into a battle without a tank healer, i practically use either of these two cards
Forth, fifth and sixth; role goes hand in hand you can choose Monsters with little mana cost that has unique abilities and strength. Sometimes i use these monsters for this positions.
Earth Element
