Splinterlands - Back to Basics

Back to Basics

I used to get very frustrated playing battles with the Back to Basics ruleset. With some more experience under my belt I have come to appreciate them as a great opportunity to dig deeper into various strategies. DOn't get me wrong, I find a lot of joy in using my collection to its fullest potential with the cards at full power, but Back to Basics puts cards on an even playing field and makes both sides pick the best strategies without the aid of abilities.

So what are some good points to consider when going into battle sans abilities?

  1. Sneak, snipe and opportunity are not a concern. In other words, your back line is safe
  2. Magic and ranged attacks are important as melee cannot attack from beyond the front position.
  3. Be careful with ranged as they will not be able to attack from the front position.
  4. Speed should be considered to help take out the likely buffed tank before your opponent can take out yours.
  5. Try and keep high health up front to protect the back row as long as possible.

Pre-battle thoughts

  • Both my opponent and I were thinking the same with Kelya, a strong melee tank and a high health magic attack secondary tank.

Results

Round 1 - Diemonshark does his job for both my opponent and myself. Interestingly we both finish the round with no armor and three health.

Round 2 - I take out my opponent's Diemonshark first, but mine falls with the very next attack. Round two finished with a race to take out each other's Oshannus. We agin end the round in the same position with seven health on our tanks.

Round 3 - Both Oshannus' fall. The interesting note here is my opponent only has ranged attacks left. This means their tank will not be able to attack the rest of the battle.

Round 4 - Round four ends with three cards left for both my opponent and myself. The difference is my tank has ten health and can attack.

Round 5 - Nothing exciting this round, just a continuation of working each other's tanks down. No cards fall.

Round 6 - I am able to take my opponent down to two cards. Tridawn still has four health and with only one attacker left my opponent can only do two damage a round. The writing is now on the wall!

Round 7 - Kulu is now a sitting duck, battle over!

Forced to think beyond the abilities

Back to Basics requires you to think beyond the strong abilities. This really can help make you a better player if you take the time to analyze the strategies.
