Los pies cansados de la caminata de más de tres kilómetros desde la casa hasta la escuela no son un obstáculo para que Mireya, una mujer joven, día a día con entusiasmo y mucha energía se encuentre con sus alumnos, nios y jóvenes entre 7 y 15 años. Son hijos de campesinos que trabajan la tierra y ayudan a sus padres, abuelos, tíos, a cultivar y criar animales. La tierra es generosa y les da lo necesario para vivir. La maestra vive en las afueras del pueblo de Mata Redonda, en la casa de su tía Francisca. La zona es agrícola, de clima fresco, ideal para hortalizas y frutales. Mientras camina va disfrutando los árboles florecidos de amarillo, naranja y rosado pues es época de sequía.
Mireya proviene de un lugar similar, pero a diferencia de estos niños tuvo la oportunidad de salir y conocer otro estilo de vida. Aprendió a valorar lo que conocía y también a extraer de todo aquel cúmulo de información y tecnologías lo que ella consideraba bueno y necesario para ayudarla a mejorar.
Esto es lo que ella piensa del progreso. “Los jóvenes están inmersos en un mar que tiene unos salvavidas que los mantienen flotando y con vida, pero también hay tiburones que los pueden hundir a profundidades a donde no llega la luz. ¿A qué deben aferrarse? ¿Cómo ayudarlos a identificar lo que enriquece el espíritu y los hará personas felices y solidarias, amorosas y justas? Es este el hombre o la mujer que es capaz de conocer y manejar las tecnologías”. Mireya tiene sus dudas.
Magaly es una entusiasta Ingeniera de sistemas y coordina el Programa “La Tecnología va a la escuela” y ha estado planificando la visita a escuelas rurales para incorporarlas al Programa. Para ella y su equipo esto sería de gran ayuda a estas comunidades. El objetivo general del Proyecto es masificar las tecnologías de comunicación, el acceso a la internet como medio para la educación de los jóvenes, en aquellos lugares donde esta tecnología no ha llegado aún.
Mariangel es agrónoma y especialista en técnicas de cultivo sustentables, amigables con el ambiente. Ella está convencida que hay que producir alimentos sanos conservando el ambiente y la biodiversidad. Es una mujer con experiencia de campo, pues se crio en el campo y tuvo la oportunidad de aprender para mejorar lo que sabía. En la huerta de su familia, ella implementa lo que ha aprendido en sus estudios y va observando los resultados adaptándolos a la realidad del ambiente para luego compartirlos con su comunidad.
Ajena a todos estos cambios que se avecinan, Carmen María cuida a su familia, su esposo Carlos Jose, productor de papa y hortalizas y sus tres hijos Mercedes, Emilio y Jesús de 15, 13 y 8 años respectivamente, van a la escuela, pero también ayudan en el trabajo de la granja. Ella tiene sueños para sus hijos, los quiere ver felices. Le gustaría que pudieran estudiar una carrera en la universidad, pero también quisiera que mantuvieran el apego a la tierra, donde han vivido siempre. Qué bueno sería combinar las dos cosas.
En la tarde, cuando ya el sol ha bajado su intensidad y se oculta entre las nubes grises que han comenzado a formarse en el cielo, el verano ya va de salida para dar paso al invierno, en el centro comunitario del pueblo de Mata redonda, se ha convocado a una reunión con el equipo del proyecto “La tecnología va a la escuela”. Las personas ya han terminado sus labores y se han ido acercando poco a poco, ocupando las sillas plásticas que han sido acomodadas en el centro del lugar.
Magaly dirige la reunión informativa
—Buenas tardes, les agradezco su presencia. Vamos a iniciar un proyecto en esta comunidad que va a ser de beneficio para todos ustedes, pero especialmente para sus hijos. —Mientras va hablando va proyectando imágenes en una pared pintada de blanco. Durante una hora explicó con detalle todos los objetivos y se creó una comisión formada por Rosario, la directora de la escuela, la maestra Mireya, y cinco representantes de los niños, entre ellos Carmen María, para coordinar la llegada de los equipos de computación y la instalación en la escuela de la zona Wi-Fi para el servicio de internet.
El proyecto ha entusiasmado mucho a los niños de la escuela, un mundo de conocimientos se abre ante ellos. Uno de los temas a desarrollar es el cambio climático. Y guiados por sus maestras, observan en su comutadora y analizan lo que está ocurriendo en todo el planeta. Van desde lo más grande, los continentes y los océanos hasta lo más pequeño. Y ven asombrados donde está ubicado su pueblo,
Los niños del salón de la maestra Mireya, observan cuáles son los pronósticos del tiempo. Esperanza, una joven de trece años, muy inteligente, se para de su pupitre y camina hacia el escritorio de su maestra.
—Maestra acá en esta página del clima, dice que se acerca un frente frío y que las temperaturas van a bajar en nuestra región,
Mireya se acerca a la computadora para ver de cerca. Sus ojos detrás de sus lentes son grandes y de color verde oscuro.
—Es cierto, con razón anoche me tuve que arropar bastante, tenía frío en los pies. Y mi gato Mimi se acurrucó conmigo. —Los niños se ríen de la expresión de su maestra— ¿Y ustedes no tenían frío?, les pregunta.
—Si yo también, casi hablan al unísono.
Mireya comienza a explicarles a los niños cómo se mueven las nubes y porque baja la temperatura.
Emilio está muy atento a lo que le explican y piensa en el cultivo de papa de su familia "¿Las plantas soportan ese frío o morirán?"
—¿Qué pasa si los cultivos mueren con el frío maestra? Vamos a perder la cosecha.
—Es cierto Miguel, esa pregunta es muy importante, ya sé a quien le vamos a preguntar. A mi amiga Mariangel.
—Pero podemos ir buscando por acá, July una niña pecosa, no quiere separarse de la computadora, está muy emocionada con todo lo que pueden aprender.
Es cierto July, pero eso nos va a llevar tiempo y necesitamos, que alguien rápidamente nos dé la información y posibles soluciones,
Mariangel es Ingeniero agrónomo, ella estudió, tiene el conocimiento y la experiencia y es muy buena. Vamos para su casa y así la conocen.
—Yo la conozco maestra, ella ayuda a mi abuelo con los cultivos, —a Esperanza le gusta hablar con Mariangel, quien siempre responde con mucha paciencia a sus preguntas y quiere ser agrónoma como ella.
La huerta de Mariangel y su familia está cerca de la escuela y Mireya y sus alumnos llegan caminando y la encuentran sembrando lechuga en unos camellones techados. Al verlos entrar se levanta con las manos llenas de tierra y su cabello cubierto con un sombrero de donde salen unos rizos negros y plateados. Su sonrisa es muy amplia y unas pequeñas arrugas se hacen en sus ojos.
—¡Qué bonita visita!, querida amiga, ¿has traído a tus alumnos a ver mis plantas? Esos muchachos ya saben mucho de esto.
¡Hola Mariangel!, seguramente aprenderían mucho de ti. Necesitamos tu ayuda, es algo urgente, —y le cuenta a su amiga lo que han investigado por internet. Ella escucha con mucha atención.
—Creo que lo primero que tenemos que hacer es estar seguros de cuándo llegarán esas bajas temperaturas y prepararnos para ayudar a las plantas a que no se mueran por el frío, sobre todo aquellas que son muy sensibles como la papa y hay que informarle a la comunidad.
—¿Y como podemos protegerlas del frío?, habrá que arroparlas, dice Jesús, dejando ver el espacio en su dentadura, porque aún no le han salido sus dientes permanentes.
—Eso mismo hay que hacer, debemos arroparlas, pero no a ellas sino al suelo y también hay que regarlas muy bien, eso las ayudará. Vamos a necesitar ayuda para comprar lo necesario y creo que la ingeniera encargada del proyecto nos puede ayudar.
—Tienes razón, ya voy a llamarla.
La helada llegó a los tres días. En la mañana las plantas amanecieron con cristales de hielo sobre sus hojas, la temperatura bajó a 2 grados bajo cero, pero la comunidad estaba preparada y a pesar de que algunos cultivos se vieron afectados, las pérdidas fueron bajas. Esto les enseñó que los cambios pueden ocurrir y que la mejor manera de enfrentarlos es estando informados y trabajando en equipo.
La directiva del proyecto felicito a todos los que participaron en esta tarea. Magaly no se imaginó los resultados tan impactantes que tuvo el proyecto en esta comunidad y para apoyarlos aún más, los productores agrícolas tendrán la oportunidad de tener los materiales necesarios para proteger sus cultivos, con la ayuda de Mariangel. Y además crearon un programa de becas para que los jóvenes puedan prepararse para enfrentar los retos del futuro y apoyar a sus familias. Esperanza podrá hacer su sueño realidad.
Las mujeres de la comunidad fueron determinantes para asumir y enfrentar los cambios. Su amor a la tierra, al trabajo y su sensibilidad para protejer la vida en todas sus manifestaciones, lo hizo posible.

They are the children of farmers who work the land and help their parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts to cultivate crops and raise animals. The land is generous and gives them what they need to live. The teacher lives on the outskirts of the town of Mata Redonda, in the house of her aunt Francisca. The area is agricultural, with a cool climate, ideal for vegetables and fruit trees. As she walks, she enjoys the yellow, orange and pink trees in bloom during the dry season.
Mireya comes from a similar place, but unlike these children, she had the opportunity to go out and learn about a different way of life. She learned to value what she knew, and also to extract from all that accumulation of information and technologies what she considered good and necessary to help her improve.
This is what she thinks of progress. "Young people are immersed in a sea that has lifeguards that keep them floating and alive, but there are also sharks that can sink them to depths where the light does not reach. What should they hold on to? How can we help them identify what enriches the spirit and will make them happy and caring, loving and just people? Is this the man or woman who is capable of knowing and handling technologies?" Mireya has her doubts.
Magaly is an enthusiastic systems engineer and coordinates the "Technology goes to school" program and has been planning to visit rural schools to incorporate them into the program. For her and her team, this would be of great help to these communities. The general objective of the Project is to massif communication technologies, access to the Internet as a means for the education of young people, in those places where this technology has not yet arrived.
Mariangel is an agronomist and specialist in sustainable, environmentally friendly farming techniques. She is convinced that healthy food must be produced while conserving the environment and biodiversity. She is a woman with field experience, as she grew up in the countryside and had the opportunity to learn to improve what she knew. In her family's vegetable garden, she implements what she has learned in her studies and observes the results, adapting them to the reality of the environment and then sharing them with her community.
Unaware of all these upcoming changes, Carmen Maria takes care of her family, her husband Carlos Jose, a potato and vegetable farmer, and her three children Mercedes, Emilio and Jesus, 15, 13 and 8 years old respectively, go to school, but also help in the work on the farm. She has dreams for her children, she wants to see them happy. She would like them to be able to study a career at the university, but she would also like them to maintain their attachment to the land, where they have always lived. How nice it would be to combine the two.
In the afternoon, when the sun has already lowered its intensity and hides among the gray clouds that have begun to form in the sky, summer is on its way out to give way to winter, in the community center of the village of Mata Redonda, a meeting has been called with the team of the "Technology goes to school" project. The people have already finished their chores and have been approaching little by little, occupying the plastic chairs that have been arranged in the center of the place.

"Good afternoon, thank you for coming. We are going to initiate a project in this community that will be of benefit to all of you, but especially to your children. For an hour he explained in detail all the objectives and a commission was created with Rosario, the school principal, the teacher Mireya, and five representatives of the children, among them Carmen Maria, to coordinate the arrival of the computer equipment and the installation in the school of the Wi-Fi zone for internet service".
The school children are very enthusiastic about the project, a world of knowledge is opening up to them. One of the topics to be developed is climate change. And guided by their teachers, they observe and analyze what is happening all over the planet. They go from the largest, the continents and oceans, to the smallest. And they are amazed to see where their village is located,
The children in teacher Mireya's classroom look at the weather forecasts. Esperanza, a very intelligent thirteen-year-old, gets up from her desk and walks over to her teacher's desk.
Esperanza says, "Teacher, here on this weather page, it says that a cold front is approaching, and that temperatures are going to drop in our region"
Mireya walks over to the computer to get a closer look. Her eyes behind her glasses are big and dark green.
"That's right, no wonder I had to tuck myself in pretty tightly last night, my feet were cold. And my cat Mimi cuddled with me". The children laugh at their teacher's expression, "And you weren't cold," she asks.
"Yes, I was too," they almost speak in unison.
Mireya begins to explain to the children how the clouds move and why the temperature drops.
Emilio is very attentive to what they explain and thinks about his family's potato crop "Can the plants withstand that cold or will they die?"
"What if the crops die in the cold master? We will lose the crop".
"¡That's right Miguel!, that question is very important, I know who we are going to ask. My friend Mariangel".
"But we can go look around here, July, a freckled girl", doesn't want to leave the computer, she is very excited with all that she can learn.

"Mariangel is an agronomist, she studied, she has the knowledge and experience, she is very good. We go to her house and this is how they know her".
"I know her teacher, she helps my grandfather with the crops," Esperanza likes to talk to Mariangel, who always responds very patiently to her questions and wants to be an agronomist like her.
Mariangel and her family's farm is close to the school and Mireya and her students walk up and find her planting lettuce in some roofed flowerbeds. When she sees them enter, she stands up with her hands full of dirt and her hair covered with a hat with black and silver curls coming out of it. Her smile is very wide and small wrinkles appear in her eyes.
"¡What a nice visit, dear friend!, have you brought your students to see my plants? Those boys already know a lot about it".
"Hello Mariangel, they would surely learn a lot from you. We need your help, it's urgent, -and she tells her friend what they have researched on the internet. She listens very carefully".
"I think the first thing we have to do is to be sure when these low temperatures will arrive and prepare ourselves to help the plants so they don't die from the cold, especially those that are very sensitive like the potato, and we have to inform the community".
"And how can we protect them from the cold, we will have to tuck them in," says Jesus, showing the gap in his teeth, because his permanent teeth have not yet come out.
"That's what we have to do, we have to tuck them in, but not them, but the ground, and we also have to water them very well, that will help them. We are going to need help to buy what we need and I think the engineer in charge of the project can help us".
"You are right, I am going to call her."
The frost arrived after three days. In the morning the plants woke up with ice crystals on their leaves, the temperature dropped to 2 degrees below zero, but the community was prepared and although some crops were affected, the losses were low. This taught them that changes can happen and that the best way to deal with them is to be informed and work as a team.
The project board congratulated everyone who participated in this task, Magaly could not have imagined the impactful results it had on this community and to support them even more, the farmers will have the opportunity to have the necessary materials to protect their crops, with the help of Mariangel. They also created a scholarship program so that young people can prepare themselves to face the challenges of the future and support their community. Esperanza will be able to make her dream come true
The women of the community were decisive in assuming and facing the changes. Their love for the land, their work and their sensitivity to protect life in all its manifestations made it possible.
