Hispaliterario 10 / Pesadilla real (esp/eng)

Ruperto stretched as usual when he woke up. But in doing so something rough brushed his arm. Instinctively, he folded it and rubbed it with his hand. He opened his eyes, a strong clarity forced him to close them again, because he felt dazzled. He put his arm like a windshield over his eyes and looked out his window, but... he thought he was dreaming.

Before him, he saw a bleak panorama, a desert with isolated bushes, practically covered with grayish dust; just as he had seen it on some forays into the nearest desert.

He needed to close his eyes again, shook his head vigorously, took a deep breath, sat up and tried to open them again: his perception presented him with the same images, but now, a light breeze starting to strengthen himself he made a shower of sand hit against his body, so thin that it was almost imperceptible. He looked down at his bare hands and arms, covered in that nasty grayish powder that almost hid a few small lacerations.

Looking at the desert

He wanted to get out of sleep, but he couldn't wake up. He looked at himself, sitting among the sparse bushes. He was wearing yesterday's shirt and work pants. He seemed strange to her, since he always took off his clothes to sleep cooler; in fact he slept indoors or on the ball. It had to be a dream. He relaxed. It was definitely a dream.

He brushed dust off his body and pants, but as he reached below his left knee he touched something sticky. It was blood! It was already coagulated and blackish.

His thoughts took him out of the desert and into the parking lot where he worked. He remembered the scene of the thugs who wanted to steal a car, but he did not let himself because he sensed that those strange subjects were looking for something more than a robbery.

He opened the car door, with such force and desperation that he knocked down the subject who had a gun on him from the window. The rain of bullets was immediate and the windshield was practically pulverized.

-Jesus Christ! How did I get here?

He accepted that he was awake and wide awake. The leg injury and multiple cuts to exposed areas of his body, including his face, told her that the broken windshield had done a good job and explained the pain he was feeling. Apparently, he had managed to escape from the group of thugs, but how had he gotten to the desert? He was quite far from his place of work.

Hunger, thirst and other physiological needs, which he did manage to satisfy, completely dispelled the dream-nightmare theory.

Desert and remains of dead city

His imagination of him then transported him to another place. Rosa was a great place in his life. He was with her making love in a luxury car that a client did not pick up before closing time. The leather seats were an incentive for "luxury" sex, in Rosa's words, but another memory took him out of the fantasy he was living. The thugs forced them out of the car. She lost her nerve and started screaming and running, he saw her fall to the ground, victim of a single shot.

Not knowing how she got up to another car and again, he received the images of the destroyed windshield and he saw himself fleeing desperately, while the image of Rosa falling to the ground, while waving her arms upwards, moved before his eyes like a Gift.

he felt wet eyes and slip some tears. Yes, he had woken up from the nightmare he had lived through. He felt alive and decided to continue like this. He had one hope left, to reach the "Dead City," to hide and survive.
