La historia del libro / The history of the book

The history of the book

The history of the book is very new if we compare it with the origin of the world; it had to wait for civilization to evolve from an oral language to a written one; it had to pass through the most rustic walls of primitive times, when our ancestors tried forms of communication on rocks, using other rocks as a pen, reaching later the pictography that served to tell the triumphs of ancient nations over others, of the exploits of kings, of great buildings, of religions. It also passed through clay and its tablets, through papyrus, until it reached paper; and today, digital spaces. But it had to wait a long time since the development of written language until the invention of the printing press.

Holding a book in your hands and not knowing its history is not a crime; it is an oversight in the case of writers, also of publishers, but mainly of readers. The reader who does not know the history of the book is missing an incalculable wealth of culture, because to know it is to know the history of society, of the economy, of culture itself; he is missing the history of history, and sadly, the history of literature.

The diffusion of the book was slow in its origins, there was no access to the great works, nor were there authors for all audiences, one could not enjoy one's own tastes because tastes had to be adjusted to what reached the reader's hands. That was left behind, as a wealth of history and to know it you have to travel there; but we do not use the train ticket, the plane ticket or the services of a ship; it is a unique journey because with it we can reach the moment when the Achaeans left the wooden horse and took Troy or when Penelope recognized Ulysses in that beggar; we can return to the Middle East and meet Scheherazade and her Thousand and One Nights, accompany her and save the women, the sultan and everyone.

It is a journey whose only ticket is reading, where the risk is worth it because it can become an adventure, where the past, the present and the future can jump from one paragraph to another and the widest of rivers can be swum without fear of drowning or the most immeasurable of small species can move a mountain. Reading is traveling, that's why the book came into the world, to give us the possibility of knowing worlds that not even traveling in trains, planes or ships, we could not reach; let's not leave aside its portentous power.

It is not, therefore, an object that can be dispensed with, but the most important of the inventions that humanity has created to keep the greatest treasure it has, its language, its culture, its existence; because the book is the chest where what exists, what has a name, what remains, the word, is kept.

The photographs were taken by centrolospeques, at an event organized by the Los Peques Reading Club to celebrate Book Day. They asked me the honor of talking about the history of the book and reading stories to the children; an activity that I could not miss because children are the readers that we cannot neglect.
