Karma is a Woman's Name
Growing up with the idea that women are part of the problem in many situations became an almost absolute statement in every household. That a woman could be the breadwinner, be independent, decide without asking permission, was something I rarely saw. Until it was my time.
I had been listening to the same song for days, one that at first said that living well was not revenge. On the contrary, living well was a privilege. I grew up in a rather dysfunctional family, where patriarchy was the law, where the female voice was not raised, until the pain was unbearable and the separation from an alcoholic father was inevitable. Mom taught me that I had to get ahead, fight against adversity, and strive to have the education she never had.
She worked hard to give me everything I needed, to send me to school, to feed me, to teach me that there was so much more out there than what life had given her. And I didn't give up because I understood that the sacrifices she had made to give me a better life had to be worth it.
The years passed, and Mom didn't let the hardships end with her. Eventually she managed to finish high school, and I went to college. Together, we benefited from the new technologies that seemed to be advancing faster and faster every day. We were not left with bitter memories of a past that would probably only haunt us in our nightmares.
I didn't hear from my father for quite a while, but I knew that karma existed, and although it may not seem like it, karma is a girl's name. Ironic, that this one would follow him and teach him a life lesson. I also understood that we were all the final girl in horror movies, but that we could also be the killer of our own dreams. That calming down would not change the voracious appetite to raise my voice for my mother and for all the women who were fighting against the system, against the patriarchy. That I had to take advantage of the innovation of technology and networks to be able to do something meaningful for those who still lived in submission out of fear.
And as I grew older, I came to give my energies to bring a new idea to the world. We were not rag dolls, we were not child factories, nor were we housewives for eternity. We were much more; we were dreamers, inventors, teachers, and many other things, for which we deserved merit, we deserved equity.
So as I write this opinion, I know that Karma is circling around to collect from those who once belittled us. Those who harmed us and pretended that the day would never come when we would become the greatness of a world where for many years man reigned.
