The following story is entirely fictional, its facts are devised by the author and at no time are intended to change history.

Separador GerMan.jpg

They have departed from the port of Palos, Spain on their way to the new world. This time there are more than 17 boats and more than 1000 people on board, along with pigs, cattle, poultry and some rodents that sneaked in.

Entire families, many women and representatives of the Catholic Church were traveling. Among the people was Jesús María Charola, one of those appointed by the Catholic kings to take possession of new territories to be governed on behalf of the crown in the newly discovered continent. Along with him traveled Doña María de los Ángeles (his wife) and his daughter María Fernanda.

The trip was quite eventful; they had to stop at the islands they found along the way due to rudder malfunctions in several boats. After that and halfway, most of the crew and passengers began to present fever and rashes in their bodies. Among the sick were Doña María de los Ángeles and her daughter, who were able to recover two weeks after their departure thanks to the dedication of Dr. José Miguel de la Torre, a friend of Governor Jesús María and admirer of the beautiful María Fernanda.

While some recovered, others fell with the same symptoms of high fever and rashes.

Meanwhile, on the continent, the representatives of the crown continued in their work of evangelizing and grouping the indigenous population. Many of the royalists went too far and used violence against the indigenous people, and this did not bear good fruit.

Some accepted without major problem, but others were more rebellious and fled to the jungle, they did not want to be subdued, they did not want to lose their usual freedom and wanted to keep their ideas and customs.

Among them was a native of great size, impressive strength and much sought after by the natives; Yonovoypalla.

Post Instagram (3).jpg

Together with Yonovoypalla, a large number of the indigenous population left to gather in the innermost part of the jungle, where the conquerors had not arrived. That place rich in fruit trees and fertile land for planting, was near a river with abundant fish; that is, nature provided them with food in satisfactory quantities for the group of about 40 Indians consisting of children, women and men.

Although Yonovoypalla was well liked and many followed him, he was not the leader and they paid respect to the old warrior, a chieftain who decided what actions to take.

Days and months went by and the indigenous community of Yonovoypalla continued to grow because many other indigenous people who had fled from the conquistadors arrived and joined the community, creating a large population.

On the other hand, the new arrivals from Spain had already settled in the new continent and had assumed their responsibilities in order to fulfill their objectives.

Governor Jesús María, in order to expand the crown's dominions, prepared a series of activities to successfully achieve his plans. Other ships were about to arrive from the African continent and they were full of slaves who would do the heavy work for the conquest of the inland.

At the governor's house, things were not very good, Dr. José Miguel de la Torre had asked for authorization to court María Fernanda and Jesús María, together with Doña María de los Ángeles, had gladly accepted his pretensions; this without consulting the young lady involved.

María Fernanda flatly refused to have a romantic relationship with a man who had been with her for 30 years and who, according to her, smelled like an unbathed donkey.

Post Instagram (4).jpg

All this created arguments between Jesús and his daughter, totally breaking the loving relationship they had always had. María Fernanda was constantly crying and even the idea of suicide danced in her mind.

In one of those fights, the young girl decided to run away from home and ran as far away as possible to the jungle. Her thought was that she was better off with the wild animals and dangers than with her own family; her mother did not support her, she always said yes to all the governor's decisions.

Maria Fernanda, she was not stupid, she did not go alone, she was accompanied by her faithful servant Bernarda, who was her confidant who supported her in everything; although in this case she did not agree very much with the decision to flee because it scared her a lot.

Dusk was approaching and the noises of the jungle increased, as did Bernarda's trembling. Maria F. was scared, but she did not show it, she had made a decision and nothing would make her change it.

Meanwhile, in the town, the concern was submerged in the arrival of the ships with the slaves and the increase of sick people. Yes, most of the Spaniards and Indians were suffering from high body temperatures and very worrying rashes.
Dr. de la Torre and his colleagues, along with nurses, could not cope with so many patients, they were exhausted and very worried. They knew that these symptoms had been seen in the Iberian Peninsula and everything indicated that smallpox had also come to conquer the new world.

The night came and with it a heavy tropical rain, Maria F. and Bernarda had no idea where they were, lost, they felt that their future was very uncertain. They did not know which way to go, they could not return to the village, their sense of direction was totally absent.

The two women did not wait to cry, fear overwhelmed them and the jungle together with the rain sounded eerie.

Doña María de los A. realized that her daughter was not there, she looked for Bernarda and she was not there either, she thought they were together, but where?

I did not want to give the news to Governor Charola, but the hours passed, the rain increased and the night covered the sky; waiting could have been worse.

When Charola found out, she exploded like a volcano, it was the last straw that just when she was most complicated with the affairs of the region, a family problem was presented to her. But there was not much she could do, the rain was so intense that it would be impossible to locate anyone more than a meter away; she decided to wait for the rain to stop. Besides, he thought that a cold night, without the warmth and comforts of home, would give Maria F. a lesson.

The night along with the rain was relentless, the night darker and the rain heavier. That kept the two lost girls in intense fear.

Looking for a place to shelter from the rain, Maria F. observed what appeared to be a space covered by large branches and leaves that could be perfect for camping and waiting for the rain to stop.

As they approached to enter the space they observed in the darkness that something moved.

-Oh, my goodness! they both exclaimed.

It was a tiger, a small tiger, like a big cat, but a tiger nonetheless.

They ran in the opposite direction to the tiger to save its life, the tiger ran scared in another way.

In the race, the two women fell into a very fast-flowing river and the current dragged them meters downstream until they were able to hold on to something and thus save themselves. Bernarda, in the fall, held Maria F. tightly by the arm and never let go. This meant that the two girls were never separated.

Post Instagram (5).jpg

Now they were more lost than ever, totally wet, full of mud, but above all, disheveled. At that moment they did not want to be saved, found, because before looking like rags, they would rather be dead.

Cold, hunger, tiredness and fear together are not a good combination, it was the biggest nightmare for these two girls. To make matters worse, Maria F.'s long dress had torn along with her underwear and her backside was exposed to nature.

Bernarda wanted to tear her dress to use part of the fabric to help cover her protector, but the girl in a fit of rage told her not to do anything, that she didn't mind being like that.

They approached a large rock, took branches and large leaves and improvised a roof so that the cold would not be so intense. In front of them they placed branches to serve as an alarm in case any animal approached. The stories of Maria F.'s adventurous cousin were of some use.

The crying of these girls did not stop like the rain, it seemed that they were going to dry up, they cried, cried and cried and even at some moments they screamed complaining for living this misfortune. All this happened throughout the early hours of the morning until sleep overcame them.

Late in the morning, when the sun seemed to want to come out, the rain stopped, and the birds' noise, along with the other noise of the jungle, woke the girls up to realize that the nightmare was still present.

It was in the sunlight that they realized how ugly they were and even lost their shoes.

It occurred to Maria F. that they should head downriver, perhaps by doing so they would find help.

Governor Charola was able to assemble a search party and in turn organized the newly arrived slaves and decided to kill two birds with one stone. He would cover more territory and search for his daughter.

A group of recently arrived Iberians also joined the expedition and with them was Dr. de la Torre; he was the other one most interested in finding the escapee.

Yonovoypalla along with the other tribesmen went out in search of food, hunting and fishing. They separated into three groups with one responsibility each and none could return empty-handed. Even when they were separated into groups, they did not stray far from each other in case of danger or emergency.

Maria, Fernanda and Bernarda continued downstream walking along the riverbank. The river was on the right and the vegetation on the left. Hunger, tiredness, fear, had them tormented, there was a moment when they stopped to feed, they saw some beautiful yellow fruits that looked edible and just as they were about to take their first bite they heard a noise in the undergrowth.

They thought it was an animal. Bernarda tried to get closer to see what the noise was about and at that moment a deer appeared. The two women screamed in panic and this caused the animal to run off into the jungle.

But not only this frightened the girls, behind the deer came some men with spears, arrows and brave faces. This ended up detonating the screams of the girls, they felt that their hearts were about to burst out of their chests.

The men did not stop, they continued chasing the deer.
The girls, seeing that, sighed and decided to walk the opposite way to the men and the deer, but when they took the first step the screams came back, only this time they burst into tears and the emotional impact was so intense that they fainted.

A large man, bigger than the others and with a painted face, came across her and the look was like that of a monster that was going to eat her.

It was the second group commanded by Yonovoypalla's younger brother and further back came the third group with the older brother.

The leader instructed the second group to take the women to the tribe's settlement, while the group he commanded helped the first group hunt the deer.

Hours later all the groups met with the tribe and brought meat, fish, many fruits and some tubers.

The old cacique went to the hut where the Spanish women were, there he tried to calm them down, asked for food, water and spoke to them serenely, so that this would calm the girls down.

The most outgoing girl, Maria Fernanda, stood up shouting that she was the governor's daughter, demanding respect and obeisance.

-What a misguided child. That's what I say; the narrator.

The cacique hardly understood what she was saying, but the gestures made him understand that she was a rude and ungrateful girl. He ordered that her water and food be taken away and that they be left alone in the hut without being able to go out.

The old cacique called Yonovoypalla and other men to discuss what to do with the white women.

Everyone agreed that they were rude and had to be punished with hunger, cold and isolation.
Yonovoypalla was assigned to take them to a nearby cave, which was the place of punishment.

Without thinking too much, he looked for two more men and went to the hut where the girls were and when he met the women, or rather when he saw Maria F. in the eyes, this muscular native, with a strong character, was captivated and nobody could take away his silly face. Even more so when he saw her white ass.

Maria F. was not far behind, she was left with a face like a flan and her eyes were shining. Bernarda noticed and gave her a push so that she fell off the moon.

At that moment the two woke up from their bubble of admiration and Yonovoypalla told the other two to take them to the cave.

Maria F., seeing the man's reaction, shook, shouted any number of words, even obscene ones, but that did not change the decision; they were moved.

Hours later Yonovoypalla could not contain himself, he wanted to see that little white ass again.
Sorry, the little white face and in his mind he couldn't let them go hungry and cold.

When everyone was asleep, Yonovoypalla brought them food and shelter. As he spoke Spanish, he told them that if they behaved well, at dawn he would take them to a better place and then to the Spanish village.

But María F. was a rebel without a cause, she was a scandal for everything and Bernarda had to call her attention and make her realize that the only person who could help them was that enormous man. Maria Fernanda stood still.

He told them that he would stay with them, that he would sleep in front of the entrance to the cave, not to watch them but to keep an eye out for any approaching animals.

But at that moment a commotion was heard, some detonations. It was the colonizers commanded by Governor Jesús María.

The order was that everyone was to be detained, subdued and whoever did not accept, the punishment was death.

Maria F. shouted to be rescued, Yonovoypalla went to defend her tribe, but the enemy was numerous and they carried firearms and against the latter it was impossible to fight.

They were all arrested, tied up and taken to the Spanish village, their crime being that they wanted to live in freedom.

Mari F. was scolded to exhaustion and almost beaten, but Dr. de la Torre advocated for her. Bernarda was punished with imprisonment and kept away from the child.

After a few days and when everything in the Charola family had calmed down, Maria F. dared to go to where the detainees were being held with the excuse of wanting to see Bernarda, but in reality she wanted to see Yonovoypalla.

When Yonovoypalla saw her, the floor moved again, he underwent an astonishing transformation, he was no longer a man and became a tender and sweet little animal.

Several moons passed and these two fell in love even though Yonovoypalla was still detained.

María F. managed to have Bernarda released and placed at her service, with the help of Doña María de los Ángeles. He tried to seek Yonovoypalla's freedom but that was not so easy, he was accused of having provoked the rebellion.

While this was happening, the town began to succumb to the fever, each of the inhabitants were falling ill, especially the indigenous population.

Doctors could not find a way to solve, to cure. The indigenous people did not have something that the Iberians and Africans had, their bodies did not have the antibodies to withstand the attack of the virus.
The indigenous population was becoming alarmingly small and among them was Yonovoypalla.

That worried Maria F., she suffered for not knowing how to cure him, she offered everything to the doctor to save him, but Yonovoypalla was very weak and the days in prison had beaten him a lot for not being well fed.

The doctor took advantage of all this to ask Maria F. to marry him so that he would do his best to save Yonovoypalla. She accepted, she wanted the good of the only man who had dazzled her.

The evil doctor did not have the slightest intention of saving Yonovoypalla, he only wanted to make the beautiful young woman his wife and instead of helping to cure him or make him better, he was poisoning him with small portions of some sinister substance, so that the man was dying slowly.

But no one knew that Jesús María and de la Torre himself were infected by another disease that came with the Africans and there was no way to save them.

Post Instagram (6).jpg

A few days later Yonovoypalla died along with many of his tribe, viruses struck the village and more distant populations.

Maria Fernanda, her mother and Bernarda, were returned to the peninsula and were never heard from again.

This was one of the many examples of how the new world was conquered; the most powerful weapons were viruses.

May the universe bless you with health, love, and prosperity.
